Republican senators, congressmen ask Supreme Court to consider overturning Roe v. Wade

Source: CBS News

Over 200 members of Congress asked the Supreme Court to consider overturning Roe v. Wade, which guarantees the right to an abortion, in a brief urging the court to uphold a Louisiana law severely restricting abortion.

The 39 senators and 168 House members submitted the amicus brief in the case of June Medical Services LLC v. Gee, which the Supreme Court will consider this spring.

June Medical Services challenged a Louisiana law, passed in 2014 and currently not in effect, which required doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital within 30 miles of the facility where the abortion is performed. If the law is allowed to be implemented, all of Louisiana's abortion clinics would close, as first reported in October by CBS News.

...snip...

All 39 of the senators who signed the brief were Republicans. Another Republican senator, Josh Hawley, had previously submitted a separate amicus brief. Only two of the 168 House members who signed the brief were Democrats — Dan Lipinski and Collin Peterson. Lipinski has been singled out by abortion rights groups for his opposition to abortion, and is facing a primary from the left.

I once thought Trump's misogyny would sink him among women. I was wrong.

I was of the opinion that women would object to their loss of choice, but now I don't know.

Roe v. Wade said that a woman's right to privacy is what permits her to make a decision on whether or not to carry a fetus to term. The people in this case are arguing about "undue burdens." That is, the sorts of laws and regulations that idiot GOP reps like to pass to try to limit a woman's ability to carry out the private decision she makes. Idiot laws like telling doctors to re-implant an embryo from an ectopic pregnancy. Something that cannot be done.

Requiring the clinics to be built in a certain way and requiring their doctors to have admitting privileges are two popular methods to try to limit a woman's ability to carry out her personal, private, and, often, painful decision. They actually have nothing to do with the concern for the woman's health and well being - no matter that they lie and say that's the reason for those laws and regulations. There are far more dangerous procedures performed in doctor's offices that are not regulated in the same manner.

This is, as always, just an attempt to control women through controlling their bodies. Shameful as always.

Radical leftists, like now Justice Ginsburg, forced women to think for themselves, continuing the leftist agenda in the 13th, 14th, 15th forced black people to think for themselves, then burdening women with the 19th.

Liberty is when white men make all your decisions for you. Deciding where and how, and for which white men you labor. When you do not need to think about who should write laws to control you, because white men are obviously the ones who need to bear that burden.

That's the White Man's Burden: thinking for non-whites, thinking for women, and telling them all what to think and how to act.

Free women from the burden of thinking for themselves, the real Women's Liberation!

He also voted against tRump's impeachment, not to mention the use of Republican talking points in his responses to constituent concerns. He may represent a "red" district in Minnesota, but there are plenty of women in that district. I personally want him primaried. It is obvious he does not represent the DFL in Minnesota.

Chief Justice Roberts is an unreliable justice, more concerned with tradition and legacy than with undying loyalty to Trump and all things evangelical.

He's no liberal, but he's unlikely to overturn a decision without a compelling argument.

If Trump/McConnell can replace RBG, then Roe is toast.

200-Plus Members Of Congress Just Asked The Supreme Court To Revisit Roe v. Wade

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/congress-scotus-brief-louisiana-abortion_n_5e0e3c6be4b0b2520d1e9dd1

More than 200 members of the U.S. House and Senate signed on to an amicus brief Thursday decrying the “unworkability” of current abortion rights and asking the Supreme Court to reconsider some of its key decisions on the issue.
..........................................
..................

A discrepancy across the judicial system about what defines an undue burden on a large fraction of women seeking abortion, which is the standard upheld by Roe v. Wade in 1973, “illustrates the unworkability of the ‘right to abortion’ found in Roe v. Wade ... and the need for the Court to again take up the issue of whether Roe and Casey should be reconsidered and, if appropriate, overruled,” the brief states.

...............................................

..........Much of the brief is dedicated to enumerating clinic protocol violations at various Louisiana abortion clinics, something Scalise highlighted in a statement he issued Thursday.

“I urge the Supreme Court to uphold this law which ensures the health and safety violations meant to protect Louisianans from the very abortionists who don’t want high standards,” he said.

But doctors and reproductive rights activists say that narrative is highly misleading. With a less than 1% rate of major complications, abortion is one of the safest medical procedures offered. In fact, there’s a higher rate of hospitalization for wisdom tooth removal than there is for abortion.
