Pentagon rejects Trump threat to hit Iranian cultural sites
Source: AP
The Pentagon on Monday distanced itself from President Donald Trumps assertions that he would bomb Iranian cultural sites despite international prohibitions on such attacks.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the U.S. will follow the laws of armed conflict. When asked if that ruled out targeting cultural sites, Esper said pointedly, Thats the laws of armed conflict.
The split between the president and his Pentagon chief came amid heightened tensions with Tehran following a U.S. drone strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Irans elite Quds Force. Trump had twice warned that he would hit Iranian cultural sites if Tehran retaliates against the U.S.
Espers public comments reflected the private concerns of other defense and military officials, who cited legal prohibitions on attacks on civilian, cultural and religious sites, except under certain, threatening circumstances.

(29,213 posts)he was a fire control officer on a small destroyer in the Atlantic for much of the war.
During the invasion of Italy by the Allies, his destroyer supported the beach landing at Anzio.
Word came down that there was a German artillery spotter who was located in a Church bell tower near the landing area, directing German artillery fire onto the beach.
The Navy asked if the church bell tower could be taken out WITHOUT damaging the historic church (and possibly upsetting the Italian population).
Now the destroyer was sitting about a half mile or so off shore... and bobbing around in moderate seas. My dad made the calculations and directed the single shot from the destroyers gun and peeled the bell tower off the church and into the street below. The church was not hit at all. The destroyer got a special commendation for that action at Anzio and awarded the gun crew and my father a medal for their efforts that day.
Why do I tell you this? Because even in WWII and fighting the goddam Nazi bastards, our armed forces went to special effort to avoid destroying landmarks... even when in use as a military post by the enemy. How far we have fallen to be led by a moron who thinks it is OK for use to attack a nations historical landmarks and architecture which have no military or war production or terrorist value.
I'm sure my father is spinning in his grave right now.

(9,668 posts)I'd add that we're still fighting the damned Nazi bastards and likely always will. But it's a fight we must carry on.
That's a great account about your dad.

(12,165 posts)are part of the heritage of people throughout history.
Trump does not get to choose to destroy them. It is beyond sickening that he and his followers threaten to demolish them. One cultural sites and artifacts are destroyed, they can not be returned to their original state.
What it is not is surprising. The Republican Party is driven by a mentality of "sticking it" to its perceived enemies. They feed off of anxiety and are sustained by their hatefulness. Their appetitive for hate is so great that it outweighs needs for healthcare, food security and an environment where their children can live meaningful lives.
