6.5 quake strikes Puerto Rico amid heavy seismic activity
Source: Seattle Times
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico before dawn on Tuesday, the largest in a series of quakes that have struck the U.S. territory in recent days and caused heavy damage in some areas.
A tsunami alert was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Puerto Ricos Electric Power Authority also reported an island-wide power outage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit just south of the island at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. It initially gave the magnitude as 6.6 but later adjusted it.
There were no immediate report of injuries or damage but the power outage made it hard to obtain information.

Maybe Congressional Republicans will send their thoughts and prayers and Trump will toss some paper towels.

Agence France Press said people wrote on social media that they were shaken awake by quake's force. One woman tweeted that she'd been "wrenched from sleep" and said, "Everybody is awake & scared all over."
Víctor Huérfano, director of Puerto Rico's Seismic Network, told The Associated Press he doesn't have immediate reports of damage or injuries because communications are down for much of the island. He said officials in the large southern coastal city of Ponce told him there was widespread damage.

LOL, it takes all the stuff in the address to get the exact location and proper sizing.
Otherwise, just go here and do the locating and other settings yourself: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/
To add insult to injury, there's a new 6.0 and an almost simultaneous 5.8 that just occurred (at about 6:20 Eastern time).
Time to beef up my Red Cross contributions for both Puerto Rico and Australia.

(129,165 posts)The swarm is around the 2 intersecting shelf faults in that area. I didn't expect bigger ones to hit after that initial 5.8. I read that the worst was a 7.0 back in 1918 and hope it doesn't come to that. It's already collapsing cliffs along the shore in that area of southern P.R.

SAN JUAN, Jan 8 Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard yesterday after a series of earthquakes including one of magnitude 6.4 that was the most powerful to strike the Caribbean island in 102 years.
The quakes killed at least one person, provoked a protective power outage across the entire island and cut off drinking water to 300,000 customers, Vazquez told a news conference.
At least 346 people were left homeless, officials said, as homes were flattened, mostly in the south of the island. Many damaged buildings sat next to piles of rubble.
The declaration of emergency will facilitate federal financial aid for the US territory. Vazquez said she had been in contact with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Several members of Congress including Florida's two US senators and Puerto Rico's non-voting member of the House of Representatives appealed to US President Donald Trump for aid.
