Trump Inaugural Committee Donor Accused of Obstructing Probe

A fundraiser for President Donald Trump back-dated a check to a fellow donor and deleted emails to obstruct a federal investigation into his activities, U.S. prosecutors said.
Imaad Shah Zuberi was charged with a single count of obstruction of justice by prosecutors in the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office. The accusation was filed Tuesday in a type of charging document called an “information,” which often signals an intent by the defendant to plead guilty.
Zuberi, who ran the venture capital firm Avenue Ventures, previously pleaded guilty to charges in Los Angeles federal court that he made nearly $1 million in illegal campaign contributions from 2012 to 2016 and admitted hiding work for foreign nationals in lobbying the U.S. government.
David Kelley, a lawyer for Zuberi, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The fundraiser had some prior experience with inaugurations. The day after President Barack Obama’s second inauguration, prosecutors say, Zuberi falsely told three individuals that their photos with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden had been placed on hold because they hadn’t donated the proper amounts. Court documents note that Zuberi had donated $257,500 to Obama’s 2013 inaugural committee, but then pocketed refunds from the committee for $160,000 of that total.
