Iran launches missiles into US air bases in Iraq: US official

Source: ABC News

Multiple missiles have been launched into Iraq from Iran targeting American bases.

"This morning, courageous fighters of the IRGC's Air Force launched a successful operation called Operation Martyr Soleimani, with the code 'Oh Zahra' by firing tens of ground-to-ground missiles at the base of the terrorist and invasive US forces," the country's state-run news outlet ISNA reported.

A U.S. official confirms to ABC News that ballistic missiles have been fired from inside Iran at multiple U.S. military facilities inside Iraq. The facilities include Erbil in northern Iraq and Al Asad Air Base in western Iraq, the official said.

This jackass has GOT to be reined in, and I don't mean by the next election! He's endangering our troops' lives, and trying to dump us into another war. All for his own ego and personal gain. This is probably the most impeachable thing he's done yet.

Got an email from my niece today in Germany. Her husband is stationed there. She said he's,

"super upset about the Syria incident, because he was deployed there and doing the work first hand. It basically wipes out all of the relations they'd built and all the work they put in. It's a hot topic with him. It's a huge mess over here too. People think trump's supporting troops, but it only makes their lives harder. Especially for those of us stationed over here in Europe. It makes us an easy target, but they sure don't think about that."

I worry about them. There could be retaliation anywhere, and they live on base. She's pregnant.

And oh how I hate seeing bad behavior rewarded - and thus, reinforced. But Good Grief, leaving trump in office is NOT what you’d call the lesser of two evils. BOTH options are actually quite dreadful.

Iranians take credit for rocket attack on base housing US troops

By Hamdi Alkhshali, CNN

Updated 6:47 PM ET, Tue January 7, 2020

(CNN)At least 10 rockets hit al-Asad airbase in Iraq, which houses US forces, a Sunni commander of the paramilitary forces in a nearby town told CNN. Qatri al-Obeidi, a commander in the nearby town of al-Baghdadi, said that the shelling has stopped for now. President Donald Trump visited the base in December 2018 to visit troops after Christmas. Vice President Mike Pence also visited the base in November 2019. The attack follows last week's deadly US drone strike that Trump ordered to kill key Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Iranian state TV reported that the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, "has hit U.S. Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq with tens of missiles." The IRGC warned the US of of more "crushing responses in case of new aggression," according to state TV. The IRGC said it will target any regional state that becomes a platform for US aggression, a second banner on state TV read.

CNN reported earlier on Tuesday that US forces and air-defense missile batteries across the Middle East were placed on high alert overnight Monday to possibly shoot down Iranian drones as intelligence mounted about a threat of an imminent attack against US targets, according to two US officials.

Trump was briefed on the reports of rocket attacks, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said. "We are aware of the reports of attacks on US facilities in Iraq. The President has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team," Grisham said.

this is a very stupid escalation, that no one should die over. Mr. Trump's motives are clear, he is unfit and shouldn't be making strategic decisions given his crimes.

recruiters absolutely have a quota, they're going to raise all kinds of stink not just because of their quota numbers, but also because having somebody defer looks poorly upon them.

they are used car salesman, and will employ a wide range of tactics to put pressure on a young man to make a decision he doesn't want to.

should these games begin I would suggest contacting your congressperson if the individual you're speaking of decides they do not want to join. you could also seek to speak to the OIC over the recruiter station also. but they're often in on the shenanigans.

take this as you will,

just talked to my cousin who is an Army recruiter and texted to confirm with him that anyone who has "joined" the military isn't legally required to ship to bootcamp. He said correct.

so if you are able to persuade this individual to not ship, then legally they don't have to.

yeah I look back at why I joined in 2007 and not sure I've got any actual reason. glad I did it. but can assure you I'm not rushing down tomorrow reenlist for this corrupt and illegitimate administration.

Game plan is this:

It's about supply and attrition.

There is no way that our military can win a conventional war against Iran.

To defeat Trump you need to crash the US economy, it's the only thing Trump has.

Iran has experience, size, and military capability that Saddam did not. Iran is experienced at a war of attrition. The Iran-Iraq war lasted 10 years. Hard to see how this is resolved quickly, unless there is de-escalation. Trump can't spell "negotiation". But I think we'll know more by August.

Tue Jan 7, 2020, 09:32 PM
Jan 2020

This suggests that they are not targeting civilians right now or bases where civilians reside. They are treating this as a military situation, a response to what they consider an act of war by Trump.

The Guardian is reporting there are 400 UK troops in Iraq who have suspended training of Iraqi troops in order to protect themselves. They hsve been relocated out of the Green Zone for their safety.

Meantime, British wsrships, helicopters, and several hundred troops are on standby for deployment within 48 hours. Britain has informed Iran that deaths of any British civilians or military will not be tolerated. 20 military planners are being deployed to develop contingency plans, depending on how things play out. British warships are in the Gulf, ready to escort British oil tankers if necessary.

96. Iran calls it tit for tat. But it will escalate
Tue Jan 7, 2020, 09:55 PM

of course because Trump will retaliate.

There is also the real possibility that radicalized people insude the US will act independently with terrorist attacks within the US. Plus Iran's threat to target a site in the US next..

Since Iran's military capabilities are so much less than ours, it occurs to me that they have some powerful backing from somewhere for them to take this step, knowing it will result in US retaliation. This has the makings for a world war when the sides line up. Britain will stand with us but I don't know who else might. Maybe other Anglo nations, but I would not count on Australia since their hands are full at the moment.

That outcome cinches Trump's capacity to evoke war powers, etc., which is another causality of this and my best guess is it has been his motivation for provoking this is the first place.

I don't think it was just some dumb move with out a strategy. That's the strategy. Let's see how he now plays this out and what powers he wants, takes or makes up in regards to staying in power.

Tue Jan 7, 2020, 10:38 PM

as far as what powers he will grab. Also have thought that the action is deliberate, but that he is still bungling it as far as US security goes. What good will it do him to seize dictatorial powers if our economy is bled dry, our military exhausted and perhaps the rest of the world aligning to isolate us?

As for his reasons, the first is to distract from and try to nullify the impeachment by upstaging it. From there, he could try to "postpone" the election for national security reasons. Bush floated the idea in 2004 but never actually tried to act on it.

This could be as useful to Trump as the Reichstag fire was to German fascism. Not s false flag operation, but with the same results regarding usurpation of power.

To clarify, MSNBC said Iran reported that base was leveled with at least 30 dead. No confirmation (nor any statement) has been issued by the White House or the Pentagon at this timeregarding damage/casualties.

Trump did just tweet that "All is well" and that damage is being assessed.

By that I mean the leadership in Iraq is dependent on appearing to be strong to its people to stay in power as any sign of weakness risks a revolt so they have to appear to do something but they know they cannot really take on the US.
The US Trump advisors know they fucked up but they cannot appear weak because they fear the blowback that will hit them so they arrange this with Iran where they can fire missiles at us to appease their people and the Trump people will make sure none of our people are killed but they will use it to rally their base before the election.
Other than that though it will not really escalate much more than that.

Is the Iranian warned us through proxies that the attack was going to occur. Also, they targeted Al Asad air base, which for one, is massive and has a whole ton of open land for missiles to hit and damage little to nothing, and two, is closer to Syria than it is Iran. If they really wanted to cause casualties, they would have hit bases closer to their borders. The longer the flight time for the missiles, the more time we have to evac and bunker down after the launches are detected.

General? I mean lets consider this he was apparently very popular so was he popular enough that they feared he could be a threat to their power?
If so then perhaps this entire thing was staged with Iran arranging with Trump to kill the guy to get him out of the way and then they both agreed before hand to throw pretend punches at each other in other to help themselves and cover up the assassination.

I haven't read anything that suggested he was a threat to the Iranian supreme leader, actually, I have read the opposite, that he(soleimani) enjoyed a good relationship with Khamenei and many thought that he would eventually become President of Iran or even succeed Khamenei as leader. Now everything tonight being staged and agreed to quietly by Iranian and US officials as a way for Iran to save some face and deescalate things, that I could believe.

From CNN: "The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in its Telegram channel that, in the event Iranian soil is bombed, it will target the cities of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Haifa, Israel, in the third wave of operations."
