NY Times' Haberman: Trump 'surprised' Iranian strike wasn't 'more of a unifying event'

Source: The Hill

New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman said Friday morning that President Trump "actually was surprised" his decision to take out Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani wasn't "a unifying event for the country.”

Appearing on CNN, Haberman was asked by actor John Berman if Trump was surprised that the House voted Thursday to limit his ability to go to war with Iran.

“He actually was surprised this was not more of a unifying event for the country, which is what he expected it was going to be," Haberman responded. "Something more along the lines of what you saw around the Iraq War lead-up."

"However, that lead-up came after a massive attack on U.S. soil," she continued. "It’s not remotely the same. It’s not as if General Soleimani’s name rolls off of most voters’ tongues very easily."

It was a very unifying event also for the growing Anti War Movement in this country. Just read the comments at The NY Times this last week to see that mainstream liberals are also sick of these wars. There is some solidification of The Democratic Party and the Anti War Movement. Good news for America and Bring our War Dollars Homw!

First of all that he thought that would work. And second of all, that anybody remembers the run up to the Iraq War as a unifying event. The nation saw some of the biggest protests ever in the run up to that war. I remember them well. Spent 12 hours in jail one night after choking on some tears gas and pepper spray from this supposedly unifying event.

Killing an Iranian military leader we never heard of on Iraqi soil, inciting hatred in both countries leading to protests and stampedes killing civilians and to the shooting down of a Ukrainian plane full of Canadians and other civilians didn’t lead to a unifying event here in America?

Is he completely nuts? Yes.

When it's someone who really has been the linchpin of mass murder/terrorism, like bin Laden or al Baghdadi, nearly everyone will say "good riddance". But the blame they're now putting on Soleimani is new; they never bothered saying it before, so plenty of people are skeptical about it. And, realistically, the various IEDs etc. probably would have been used anyway, with or without him, even if the Quds force did organise the campaign.

So when he was given the chance of killing a guy he hadn't heard of before, he leapt at it. But few Americans are as psychopathic as he is. And the average American thinks through consequences more than he does, so they also think "yeah, but it was a dangerous move". Perhaps he should imagine how he'd feel if someone assassinated Putin.

the entire military base and the surrounding community gasped. When EVERYONE goes, you know this is serious business. And the sad part is, this was not serious business; this was made up shit so that the Orangeman could gain some props while sending OPC (Other People's Children) into a potential unnecessary combat situation, while he and his privileged kids sit on their ASS and help themselves to our Country's treasures, running up the Nation's Debt while contributing NOTHING of SUBSTANCE to this Country.

And Trump has the nerve to be upset that we didn't hold a parade in his honor for his stunt at playing Commander-in-Chief at the expense of those Ukrainians and Canadians that lost their life, and had no clue as to what was ahead of them when they simply bought an airplane ticket.

assassinated by Trump. Unlike, say, Osama bin Laden, the dead man was pretty much unknown to most people. So, there was no unity in being happy he was dead. Instead, it was an alarming, sudden event that could not have been predicted.

Once again, Trump acted stupidly, to be quite frank.

He thinks b/c he won that means he can fool half of the country most of the time. He can't. He doesn't understand how large a fraction of the people who voted for him, or gave him campaign contributions, know EXACTLY who he is but generally don't care (~1/3 in the case of Trump voters, much higher in the case of Trump funders) because of what they are getting in trade.

But when it comes to another war in the Middle East -- this time with a much more dangerous enemy (cyber-capable, soon to be nuclear-armed, proxy-rich) -- those people aren't buying it.

That never ceases to amaze, befuddle, and frustrate me.

He spews constant word salad and conspiracy theories. He pays off porn stars after having sex with them, while he's married. "Grab 'em by the pussy". His wall is a failure, jobs haven't come back, the working class people who voted for him haven't seen one single improvement in their lives. Tons of his "best people" are in jail doing illegal stuff at his command. His youngest son is, by his supporter's definition, an 'anchor baby'.

He is the living embodiment of everything they complain about. He is also all of the 7 Deadly Sins in one body. And they cheer him on.

They truly are blind.

I'd say we're in the Third Act now. The Fourth will be a short, tumultuous period of disintegration and overblown attempts to create a mega-event that will rocket him to uber-acclaim. The Fifth, which can't get here soon enough, will be total collapse, betrayal all around, and a crimson Shakespearean climax.
