Barnier: Goods entering Northern Ireland from Britain will be checked after Brexit
Source: Politico
Goods entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain after Brexit will be subject to checks and controls, the EUs chief negotiator said Tuesday, contradicting statements made by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Implementation of this [Northern Ireland] protocol foresees checks and controls for goods entering the island of Ireland," Michel Barnier told the European Parliament.
"I look forward to a constructive cooperation with U.K. authorities to ensure that all the provisions set out in this agreement are respected and made operational.
Johnson has insisted such controls would not be introduced under his Brexit deal with Brussels, doubling down on this point during a press conference Monday.

(279 posts)Why would the UK need controls over goods going to Northern Ireland? And if Brexit goes through, the EU will have no say about internal movement of goods in the UK. The issue is the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

(94,757 posts)There has to be a trade barrier between non-EU Britain and the EU, but there can't be between non-EU Northern Ireland and EU Ireland (Good Friday Agreement). SO they've patched one together between Northern Ireland and the rest of Great Britain. DUP was against this, but after the last election, the Tories don't need them anymore.
Thanks for the clarification! This entire situation has become ridiculous, with no winners.
