Pentagon: 50 troops suffered brain injuries in Iran strike

WASHINGTON (AP) The Pentagon on Tuesday raised to 50 the number of U.S. service members who suffered traumatic brain injuries in Irans missile strike earlier this month on an Iraqi air base, the third time the number of injuries has been increased.
The new casualty total belies President Donald Trumps initial claim that no Americans were harmed. Days after the attack, the military said 11 service members were injured. Last week, the Pentagon said that 34 U.S. service members were hurt.
Lt. Col. Thomas Campbell, a Pentagon spokesman, said Tuesday that 16 additional service members were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury. Of the 50, Campbell said, 31 service members had returned to duty.
The service members were treated in Iraq, or at military health centers, including Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. military hospital outside the continental United States, and a U.S. military medical facility in Kuwait.

(14,972 posts)The Pentagon clearly passed on false information to the press (never mind Trump's initial lie), there is no plausible case to be made that this was accidental.
While some of the injuries may have been delayed in getting diagnosed or reported, the numbers now are large enough to destroy any reasonable chance that they have not knowingly and purposely disseminated false information.

(2,716 posts)I once did design work for the VA at a facility that treated traumatic brain injury patients. The design guidelines had provisions that were intended to make suicide more difficult. Several noted NFL players who have taken their own lives were diagnosed with TBI. Some of these victims will die from their headaches.

(70,516 posts)"The total of 50 injured soldiers might not even be the final tally, according to the Pentagon statement. CNN cited Defense Department officials who said that the count may increase again at some point. About 200 U.S. troops who were in the blast zone when the Iranian rockets hit have already been screened for symptoms of traumatic brain injuries."
