Global Dissatisfaction With Democracy At A Record High, Research Says
Source: CNBC News
The world is unhappier with democracy than ever, new research has claimed. In a report published Wednesday, researchers from Cambridge University analyzed the political sentiment of more than 4 million people, using data from survey projects that covered 154 countries between 1995 and 2020.
The proportion of people who said they were dissatisfied with democracy over the last year hit 57.5%, according to the report, with researchers saying 2019 marked "the highest level of democratic discontent" on record.
Authors noted that over the last 25 years, the number of individuals dissatisfied with democratic politics around the world rose from a third to more than half. Shifts in satisfaction levels were often a response to "objective circumstances and events" such as economic shocks and corruption scandals, the report said. Following the financial crisis in 2008, for example, global dissatisfaction with the functioning of democracy jumped by around 6.5%.
Many large democracies, including the U.S., Australia, U.K. and Brazil, were now at their highest-ever level of dissatisfaction with democracy. According to the report, the U.S. in particular had seen a "dramatic and unexpected" decline in satisfaction with democracy...

Surveys began in 1995 when more than 75% of Americans were satisfied with democracy. The 2008 financial crisis was the first large shock with decline in satisfaction continuing every year since then.
Currently less than 50% of Americans are content with democracy in the U.S., the first time on record that a majority of U.S. citizens were dissatisfied with the system of government.
"Such levels of democratic dissatisfaction would not be unusual elsewhere," the *University of Cambridge report said. "But for the United States, it marks an 'end of exceptionalism' -- a profound shift in America's view of itself, and therefore, of its place in the world."
But researchers noted that there was an "island of contentment" in Europe, with democracy satisfaction at all-time highs. Among the nations in that group were Denmark, Switzerland and Norway...

(4,124 posts)What percentage of the people questioned have lived under another kind of government?
They are trying to conflate dissatisfaction with ones own government with dissatisfaction of a type of government. Soften everyone up for the next surge in Fascism.

(12,165 posts)People are working their fingers to the bone to keep up with rent and day-to-day expense. A medical emergency can wipe out what meager savings they have.
So, it's the system that is not working for them. It's not an abstract notion of democracy or neoliberal economics or crony capitalism. What they feel, perhaps more than anyone, is that the status quo is making life harder.
It's an academic exercise to parse the variants of capitalism. Most people don't have time for that. They need help and they need it today.
So, when asked if they are dissatisfied with democracy, and they say yes, it signals they are dissatisfied with the system in which they live.

(7,432 posts)where dissatisfaction is increasing. It's the old story of "taxation without representation."
As most folks who have an awareness of politics knows, unregulated capitalism posing as democracy only increases cynicism and opens the gateway to fascism. This is always the caveat to "free market capitalism" within a democratic society where the wealth disparity grows to obscene proportions, as we can all attest in the US.
