US flight diverted to air force base

The evacuation flight from Wuhan to the United States has been rerouted to land at a US air force base, rather than an airport.

The plane, carrying 240 Americans, left Wuhan this morning. It was scheduled to land at Ontario international airport in southern California, 56km (35 miles) from Los Angeles.

But Curt Hagman, the chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, announced on Twitter it would now be diverted to March Air Force Base, roughly 35 miles east of Ontario.

And won’t arrive in California for a while yet- sometime this morning.

Reports now saying the 200+ Americans will be held in quarantine to watch for any symptoms for 3 days at March Air Reserve Base.

to sequester any possible carriers. I'm sorry they have to be quarantined, especially after already being so frightened by these events. I hope they are all well and can return home soon.

The U.S. government's chartered flight evacuating American consulate staffers and private U.S. citizens from the coronavirus epicenter of Wuhan, China, has been rerouted from its original California destination to a nearby military base.

The plane's 201 passengers underwent two sets of health screenings upon arrival in Anchorage, and all were approved to continue on to California, officials said in a press briefing early Wednesday morning.

Upon arrival in California, all passengers will be quarantined for at least three days and monitored by the CDC, per authorities. Those who show signs of the illness and need to be tested could be held for as many as 14 days.

We don't have enough information to be confident that 3 days is long enough for risk of disease to have passed. Get them to the U.S. And then hold them, as Australia is doing for at least 14 days. It will be tough for them, but not as tough as it would have been to remain there - and not as rough on the rest of the country as a premature release would be. It's not as if they have time plans that would be disrupted by a longer quarantine, since none of them expected to be in the U.S. At this point in time anyway. Make them comfortable while we carry out a better safe than sorry quarantine policy.

That was one of the unusual things making it so difficult to contain the spread of it.
