Robert Conrad, Star of TV's 'The Wild Wild West,' Dies at 84

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Robert Conrad, the athletic, two-fisted actor who starred as Secret Service agent James West and did his own spectacular stunts on the 1960s futuristic CBS Western The Wild Wild West, has died. He was 84.

"He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts," family spokesman Jeff Ballard told People magazine. No other details of his death were immediately available.

Conrad, among the actors employed by Warner Bros. Television to appear on the studio's stable of shows starting in the 1950s, first gained attention for playing Tom Lopaka, a partner in a detective agency, on ABC's Hawaiian Eye.

The Chicago native also was known for starring as real-life World War II pilot Maj. Greg "Pappy" Boyington on NBC's 1976-78 period drama Baa Baa Black Sheep (later known in syndication as Black Sheep Squadron), one of the first series created by Stephen J. Cannell.

Googled Oxford dictionary describes it as 'strong, virile, and straightforward' and considers it North American.

I suppose some foreigners might view it as American for 'stealing with both hands'

I was there in 1976--MANY, MANY MOONS AGO--as a 15 year old with my friends and late brother who escorted us there when he got into it with ABC over a relay race, and when he lost to Gabe Kaplan in a run off. Some of the BEST times I've had in my life ...... He was quite a handsome guy, even then and at that age, and even with that hideous cigarette in his mouth. I remember a friend who met him years ago in Malibu saying to me "He would have been a Hollywood leading man, IF he was taller, because he had the looks/physique/personality in spades."

My older sister had such a "crush" on him...

He was in a serious car wreck as I recall and I think partially paralyzed. Not sure he ever fully recovered.

In 2003, he wrecked his car while driving intoxicated:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Conrad#Car_accident

Car accident
On March 31, 2003, while on Highway 4 in the California Sierra foothills near his Alpine County home, Conrad drove his Jaguar over the center median and slammed head-on into a Subaru driven by 26-year-old Kevin Burnett. Both men suffered serious injuries. Tried on felony charges, Conrad pleaded no contest, and he was convicted of drunk driving.

He was sentenced to six months of house confinement, alcohol counseling, and five years' probation. A civil suit filed by Kevin Burnett against Conrad was settled the following year for an undisclosed amount. In 2005, Burnett died at age 28 from perforated ulcers, which his family attributed to his difficult recovery from the crash. Conrad himself suffered severe nerve injuries from the crash, which left his right side partially paralyzed.

Sad all around.

I forgot all about him and wasn't sure he was still around. I know me and my sisters would turn on "Wild Wild West" every once awhile... He was in a bunch of other stuff too as a "guest star" and character actor.

R.I.P.

I was a teen in the late 60's, and was aware that he was "hot" before I even knew what that meant.

I noticed that his trousers always fit so nicely..... He was one manly stud.

It was an episode of the Wild Wild West. I was stunned that his suit was blue, as I'd always assumed it was black.

Man, some of those episodes during the 'Ross Martin as Artie' era, especially the ones with Michael Dunn as 'Dr. Miguelito Quixote Loveless' were extremely trippy! lol

Actually, they had a lot of extremely weird villains -- kind of like an old-timey, wild west version of Adam West's Batman villains. Some were downright steampunk, well before the genre.

It sparked my interest in all things World War II.

I saw a couple of episodes later as an adult, and it was almost unwatchable. The things I had learned about the real Boyington and the hardships Marine pilots dealt with in the Pacific made "BBBS" seem as real by comparison as the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride was to actual piracy.

I think it's a good time to make a big screen bio of Gregory Boyington. I would cast someone in the mold of Adam Beach. Boyington was at least partly Native American, and graduated from my alma mater, the University of Washington.

...even though the real Greg Boyington was the techical advisor (and became Conrad's drinking buddy). Later, though, even he called it "Hollywood hokum".

In "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" as Gregory Boyington, he expressed affection for his men by beating them up. He did those battery commercials in which he dared the viewer to knock the battery off his shoulder. It was probably only an oversight that he was never cast as the 'rough trade' in a gay film.
