'No' vote - to keep state's new vaccine law - wins by overwhelming margin

Source: Portland Press Herald

The campaign to keep a new law that strengthens Maine’s school vaccination requirements won an overwhelming victory Tuesday.

With 76 percent of polling places reporting shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, the “No on 1” vote was winning 73 percent to 27 percent in a referendum that asked voters whether they wanted to overturn or keep the law. Vote tallies were 214,110 “no” votes to 74,255 “yes” votes.

At the “No on 1” election watch party at Salvage BBQ in Portland, hundreds waited for the returns to come in, and the mood was festive. Red heart-shaped balloons were positioned behind the podium.

“This vote means that parents of vulnerable kids, parents of infants, and older adults don’t have to fear anymore. This vote has brought back hope and has brought back sanity,” said Caitlin Gilmet, co-chair of Maine Families for Vaccines.

some other ridiculous reason, they're aren't that many people who get sick from the vaccines themselves).

The anti-vax folks were swamped by a 73 % to 27 % ratio of voters, which leads me to question the actual validity of all of these anti-vax people in other states besides Maine.

That 1 in 4 folks (the anti-vax folks) were literally putting the lives of 3/4th of us at risk because of their beliefs (or at least trying to). They are also bullies too, cajoling and / or demanding changes to the entire vaccine routine that many states and/or school districts use, in enrolling children into the public schools, etc.

Maybe these anti-vax people have way too much of a voice across the country (personally I see either way, in some areas, yes. In other areas, no, they don't have an outsized voice).

A win for logic. Now if we only could get the rump administration to realize how long developing an effective vaccine takes (if possible even) for the CV? I heard pence say as early as 4 weeks last night. 4 weeks. Really?

I hope these irresponsible idiots are held responsible for their rumor mongering and other idiot actions.

Reminds me of the pro-life group who sound like they are the majority but are actually not. They are just very loud bullies.

Thank you Maine for helping herd immunity.
Just wish this could take affect for fall 2020, NOT 2021 as the article states.
A LOT can happen in 18 months.

deal with in school.

And when the bullied victims (us) has had enough, we'll stand up and speak in one voice, no more! Far more loudly than these people who do NOT represent me (or you).

This is a great thing by the state of Maine. I hope others follow what Maine did.

On an otherwise disappointing night - at least for me 😔

Vermont Public Radio had a news piece last week on the topic. They even interviewed some older people suffering with late-effects of polio because they got polio just before the vaccine became available. Such sad stories and very effective to demonstrate how important vaccines are.

These conspiracy theories about diseases are undermining the health of the country.i just finished reading the comments on a local blog and the majority of them believe the coronavirus is not a threat and just overhyped media propaganda. How can US stop the spread of the virus if people believe it is manufactured?

Job of blunting concern about the COVID-19 outbreak among his rabid base.

I'm sure the recent coronavirus pandemic and orange lardass' handling of it helped with this as well.
