In rare rebuke, Chief Justice Roberts slams Schumer for 'threatening' comments

WASHINGTON Chief Justice John Roberts publicly chastised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday over comments Schumer made outside the Supreme Court as the justices were hearing a case on abortion rights.
Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested that President Donald Trump's court appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, "won't know what hit" them if they vote to uphold abortion restrictions. He spoke during a rally on the sidewalk in front of the court building.
"I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price," Schumer said.
In a highly unusual written statement issued late Wednesday, Roberts said, "Statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous." "All members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter," Roberts said.

(9,426 posts)THIS from a judge who presided over a "case" that had no witnesses allowed, nor real evidence. A case that everyone knew was already decided before it began. How does he explain THAT? Moscow Mitch should have had a stern rebuke. I have ZERO respect for Roberts after that sham impeachment trial. Time to limit the terms of these SC judges. Everyone knows what their politics are from the start.

But they make the rules, they get the criticism.

"The American Bar Association is deeply troubled by todays statements from the Senate Minority Leader threatening two sitting justices of the U.S. Supreme Court over their upcoming votes in a pending case," the ABA said in a statement. "Whatever one thinks about the merits of an issue before a court, there is no place for threats -- whether real or allegorical. Personal attacks on judges by any elected officials, including the President, are simply inappropriate. Such comments challenge the reputation of the third, co-equal branch of our government; the independence of the judiciary; and the personal safety of judicial officers. They are never acceptable."

When a Democrat like Schumer speaks up forcefully and also plays hardball Republicans all have snits and fits. Fuck them all.
