California officials demand changes to L.A. voting after election day chaos

SACRAMENTO —

California’s chief elections officer lashed out Thursday at the series of election day mishaps in Los Angeles County, demanding that local officials mail ballots to each of the county’s 5.5 million voters for the November election.

“I’m beyond frustrated and disappointed in what I saw on Tuesday, and I’m committed to making sure it doesn’t happen again,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “Clearly, voters deserve better.”

L.A. County’s rollout of its long-awaited voting system — including new ballot-marking machines and regional vote centers in lieu of neighborhood polling places — was marred by reports of broken devices and wait times of three hours or longer. Many of the voters standing in long lines were angry that they had no other way to cast a ballot in the statewide presidential primary. Los Angeles County was given special treatment under a 2016 state election law, allowing officials to close polling places without mailing a ballot to every voter.

That meant that as many 2 million Angelenos were forced to find one of the vote centers, of which there were far fewer than polling places used in the 2018 elections.

“L.A. County appealed to the Legislature for special treatment and they got it,” said Padilla, a former state senator and president of the L.A. City Council.

Local elections officials have not yet tallied the total number of votes cast at one of the 978 vote centers. While many of the locations were open 10 days prior to election day, relatively few L.A. voters cast ballots during that time.

State Sen. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), the author of the 2016 law to move counties away from traditional elections and toward a model that combines absentee ballots with full-service centers for those who want to vote in person, said he will introduce legislation next week that would require L.A. County to open more vote centers in November or mail all registered voters a ballot.

It's a bad assumption that larger = better. Sometimes having the screw ups arranged so that they may be frequent but cover a smaller area is a good thing. Otherwise, Iowa.

I know you filled out that registration form at the DMV. Well, you know what? I’ll bet you that your name is not going to be there because there’s a 45% chance in California when you sign up to register to vote on a piece of paper, your name is never entered on the voter rolls. Guess what? California has one of the worst voting systems in the entire nation.'>>>

so that is about how messed up the registration process is in that state. Jeeze...the last I read about CA elections, their brand spanking new voting system was going to be the gold standard. Got to go back to the drawing board...and then some.

As it was, early voters for Klobuchar or Buttigieg had their votes not count at all.

We need to have ranked choice voting for primaries, and then people can take advantage of the ability to vote ahead of time.

I'm sure that during the general election, with only one candidate from each party, more people usually vote absentee. I'm a permanent absentee voter in CA myself. I voted about two weeks ahead of time and just assumed that Warren would still be in.

Last-minute voters had a clearer idea of who the contenders are. Many early voters, it turned out, voted for ghosts.

Early voting will make more sense in Oct/Nov when the ballot is stable.

A big salute to all who stood in line for hours. My back would not have allowed me to stand, I would have had to give up.

but we did not eliminate any precinct locations.
The County Commissioner's Court approved the system with all current locations remaining open and no changes in anything until at least Jan 2021 (at which time everything will be reviewed and a decision will be made to either start rearranging locations or to wait another year.)

Travis Co Texas (Austin) was the first county in TX to use voting centers; they began with all precincts open and have not changed anything. The county now has the highest turnout percentages in the state.

We have 235 actual precincts and 198 voting centers. These voting centers have been in the same locations for years. They consist of two or more precincts which were low turnout and were combined. My own precinct's location has been combined with the bordering precinct as long as I have lived in this house.

One of the things our Elections Director has emphasized regarding any changes is to maintain good access for areas with transportation issues, high % of elderly voters. This may mean keeping a low turnout location open which otherwise might have been combined with another one.

A lot of us fill them out, seal them up and instead of mailing them, we drop them off at a voting center in the month before the election or on election day.

Hand marked paper ballots hand counted at the precinct level with public oversight is THE GOLD STANDARD.

And printed poll books NOT e-poll books.
