Obama: US will 'do what we must' to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons

Source: NBC News

Barack Obama told the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that the United States will "do what we must" to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

<snip>

“But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace,” he said.

“Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,” he said.

“That’s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that’s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he added.

And therefore it cannot be tolerated. There must be no brakes on our ability to loot and pillage.

Why not just tell the truth?

I am not saying support an attack on Iran. Just the opposite I think it would be disastrous.

But I am tired of people equating Iran and Israel. A country where homosexuality and adultery is a capital crime has no right to lecture Israel on anything.

Also given Bibi's interference in our election the Pres is going to tell him to go **** him selfs on Novemeber 7th if we win this thing.

rightwingers don't have a monopoly on ignorance, just more of it in their ranks proportionally.

Few things BHO has done have pissed me off more than his repeating that nonsense as well.

In fact, it was initially reported in the state-run Iranian media.

Ahmadinejad: Israel must be wiped off the map

Tehran, Oct 26 - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

"The establishment of the Zionist regime was a move by the world oppressor against the Islamic world," the President told a conference in Tehran entitled 'the world without Zionism'.

"The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of a war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land," he said.

"As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad, referring to the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini.

He's also said that Israel was a cancer that needed to be removed.

Israel is a cancer cell, says Iran

IRANIAN President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has branded Israel a cancer cell that must be removed after Israeli gunfire killed 12 people and wounded hundreds as Palestinians marched in a mass show of mourning over the creation of the Jewish state.

"On the anniversary of this regime, people demonstrated in various places, but there were dead and wounded and this regime once again showed its real nature," he said in a television interview.

"Like a cancer cell that spreads through the body, this regime infects any region. It must be removed from the body," he added.

Iran is a Shi'ite country. They never gave a care about Sunnis historically unless it was to fight against Sunni influence in the Middle East.

I'm not challenging the fact that the Iranian president said those words, but when the rubber meets the road, I doubt Iran itself would do much on the diplomatic front to stop Israel from building more illegal settlements on Palestinian land anymore than the United States has so far.

Strongly worded letters addressed to Tel Aviv seems par for the course on that issue and verbal condemnations are all that Iran would offer along with everybody else that uses the Palestinian issue as a cause to get belligerant.

Like the birthers being shown Obama's birth certificate over and over and still not believing, you see the article in the Iranian-state run press repeatedly and still refuse to accept it is real.

They all mean the same thing. It does not mean that war is imminent.
