France closes restaurants, cafes, movie theaters and other nonessential shops

Source: CNBC

France will close all nonessential stores in order to stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Europe, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Saturday in a press conference.

The order applies to restaurants, cafes, movie theaters and nightclubs, Philippe said in a press conference. Grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and public transportation will remain open to the public.

There are at least 3,667 confirmed cases of coronavirus in France, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The WHO declared Europe the "epicenter" of the global pandemic earlier this week.

"More cases are now being reported [in Europe] every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic," WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Friday at a news conference in Geneva.

From Spain.

Lockdown follows, not sure how this will play out but we have provisions at least.

esp. hard on them. I know several folks from France--mostly from my grad student days--they always talked of this.

Is the food prepared in restaurants safe? For instance, if I had Grubhub deliver food from a restaurant, would that be safe? Or could the virus be living on the packaging the food comes in?

The virus can live on surfaces for many days, so unless the restaurant you're buying from has everyone gloved and masked, there is still a risk (probably small, but you never know).

Gloves are only useful in that it's somewhat easier to change them than to wash your hands.

however some places are open for home delivery only but no idea how long that will last. They don't come to our village anyway so no worries there.
Honestly from Monday it will all probably not be available, just supermarkets, pharmacies, gas and tobacco. We cant rely on the outside even though it is in theory available. We are stocked up and the lockdown will be 15 days from Monday, I'm ok with it and as a family should be able to ride it out.

All I can say is for anyone reading a total lockdown may be on the way, no need to panic but please try and prepare. You don't need tons of pasta or tp but you do need food, water, medications and basics.
As it stands we are in our house for the next 15 days, we can go for food but hopefully don't have to.

alike. My friend in Israel says it's looking very serious there as well. He is preparing to isolate himself at home.
