Majority of Americans now say they approve of Trump's handling of coronavirus: poll

The majority of Americans now approve of President Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, a change from just one week prior, according to a new Ipsos/ABC News poll.
Of those surveyed, 55 percent said that they approved of the president's handling of the situation, while 43 percent said they disapproved. The numbers were basically reversed from one week ago when 54 percent said they disapproved and 43 percent approved.
Trump's tone and approach to the outbreak has changed in recent weeks, with the president now appearing at daily briefings at the White House with his coronavirus task force. Trump said this week that he knew that COVID-19 was a pandemic before it was labeled as such by the World Health Organization, despite his previous rhetoric downplaying the severity of the virus.
The president has passed two coronavirus stimulus packages that include paid sick leave for certain workers and free coronavirus testing.
Despite the improvement in the approval rating, the public remains strongly partisan.
Nearly 70 percent of Democrats still disapprove of how Trump is dealing with the pandemic, while 92 percent of Republicans approve of how he's handled the crisis.
There are over 14,000 confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. with at least 200 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

You had to be working with him to see what he did, because if you weren't you didn't realize that the big mess was the result of his not solving a small problem before it got huge and ugly. The people who never had a mess because they solved problems beforehand never had a chance.

Approvals are a very inaccurate volatile measure of things.
Yesterday's press conference where he was contradicted by the FDA, press, and people on the front line I suspect would give a different approval poll

(12,592 posts)Trump's con-man act is at work, convincing people he's on top of the system when he's doing squat. He's claiming credit for legislation initiated in Pelosi's House. He's signing something he says is based on a 1950s law giving him extraordinary powers to get desperately needed medical equipment (respirators, protective clothing and masks, testing kits), and then doing nothing with it. He's telling the governors, "You're on your own," and telling people with symptoms they can't get tested while celebrities and athletes can because, "Life's like that."
Four people in one family have died from the disease, and the remaining three are in intensive care. That's not "completely under control." What really irks me, however, is how Fat Donnie is revising history to say he knew it was a pandemic before anyone else.

Yes, we had a perfect plan but Democrats as they always do its all they can do. They have no plan, they have no leaders, theyre pitiful really. But were winning. Were doing great stuff, tremendous stuff stuff like no pandemic has ever seen before. And we will win. We will. I'd read this as approval based on his change in demeanor and/or attitude. It's quite likely this is going to go on for a long time. Does this wind up changing people's attitudes like 9/11 did for W? We're going to find out over the next several months. There are more pressing issues right now and in the coming months. Remember, a leopard can't change its spots (and this goes for most Republicans; their "philosophy" won't let them be reasonable during times of crisis). Their actions over the next several months will feed into people's decision come November.

(21,966 posts)Hospitals are prepared. Everyone is getting tested. Millions of masks are being provided to doctors. Hospital ships are en route to hot zones. There's a "game-changing" drug that the FDA is looking to approve.
It's reassuring to hear. It's no surprise that his approval rating has gone up.
But this is Trump we're talking about here. If what we're seeing him do now falls in line with everything else he's done as president -- which it surely does -- then it's all bullshit.
Hospitals aren't prepared. Hardly anybody is getting tested. There are no masks. There are no hospital ships. There's no game-changing drug that will be available any moment now.
Someone earlier posted about how this reminded them of the Katrina aftermath with Bush going on about what a heckuva job his administration was doing -- it wasn't until the unavoidable reality of the situation sunk in that people realized how bad he'd fucked it up.

(17,636 posts)like a master politician. It is working, whether we want to admit it or not. Those poll numbers are probably accurate. There is tremendous power in being in front of the people every day, surrounded by adoring professional staff, telling us how to save ourselves and attempting to look presidential. Advertising sells!
Donald Trump will be in front of the people, when this thing burns out, controlling the message and taking full credit for the virus' defeat. His message will be, that he alone, through his genius and courage saved the nation. Biden's message will be lost in the background noise of the crowd cheering Make America Great Again.
The worst part, in the end, as always, it will be the winners who write the history.

On a side note, one of the football forums I sometimes post to his rabid base has already thrown him under the bus after claiming he knew all along this was going to be a pandemic. That's a base that hangs on his every word and that word was a true whopper and they called him out on it in spades....so there is good news in the world.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 46% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trumps job performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove.
The latest figures include 35% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 42% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -7.

Reality seems to be very divorced from the beliefs people are holding, if that poll is correct.
However, reality and what is actual will win in that disconnect and it will probably be all the more unpleasant and shocking as a result of being so deluded about a crisis.

The numbers are increasing exponentially. We as humans do NOT understand that on a basic level. The cases are following a log curve right now - when the numbers stop increasing by hundreds and go to 1000s or 10,000s, or 100,000s then things will get bad. really bad.

(25,183 posts)don't sit around and listen to or watch three hours a day of coronavirus coverage. They can barely make it through the evening news, those who still watch it. They get their information on the fly, or from late-night talk show monologues, and they are not informed enough to realize that there's been a change in tone.
Trump's handlers were smart to get the coronavirus task force to assemble daily with boring Pence as the leader, then when last Tuesday's election left the news, then they had convinced Trump to change strategy on this, and appear presidential in front of that group.

His dumb but cunning ass latched onto the tone-change idea because he somehow sensed his hoax hype wasn't going to work long-term.
Fortunately for us though there are plenty of videos of him spewing the "virus-is-a-hoax" line that we can use for effective negative ads as the election nears.
