Trump steps up effort to tout malaria drug as coronavirus 'game changer' despite doubts from FDA

Source: The Hill

President Trump doubled down on his campaign to cast a malaria drug as a coronavirus cure, saying the treatment could be a game changer despite skepticism from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other government officials.

“HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine. The FDA has moved mountains - Thank You!” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

“Hopefully they will BOTH…be put in use IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE ARE DYING, MOVE FAST, and GOD BLESS EVERYONE!”

The president repeatedly said he has a good "feeling" about the drug at a White House press conference Friday. “I feel good about it. That’s all it is. Just a feeling,” he said. “You know, I'm a smart guy. I feel good about it. And we're going to see. You're going to see soon enough.”

When asked on Friday if hydroxychloroquine could be used to prevent COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, replied "no."

just because there have been a few reports about this drug to the effect that it might be helpful in treating cv patients. But it hasn't been tested; there aren't any peer-reviewed studies; and it can be dangerous. Nobody knows if or to what extent it will help. It has to be tested before anything can be done with it. But Trump just wants people to think he's found the cure.

Have the entire trump KKKlan spawn come out on stage for the next presser and take the drug, administered by Nancy Polosi, to verify authenticity. You know they do not want to die fron Jinuh Virus and lose their fortunes they have worked their entire lives for. So certainly they will take a drug that saves them. MAGA, Be Best. We'll see what happens!

We have reasons to believe the drug will help at least some people both from in vitro tests and actual health care usage. Everyone should hope that is true. A doctor in France used it with great results. Others have reported that it can shorten the duration of symptoms. It has become standard of care in South Korea. In the US doctors are already prescribing it and not waiting on the FDA to approve a dosage.

I never thought I would say this, but I hope Trump is right. Even if it is not a cure all, and likely it is not, if it can help some patients, take the death rate down a bit, and relieve some pressure on our hospitals it will be a good thing.

The article I read said that HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE doesn't work but it didn't mention it being used in those cases in combination with another drug so both reports could be right. They did say the side effects are harsh. (Also, see my post below on another possible treatment).

But could not relocate it. It went on to introduce the drug in the link below that they now seem to think has better promise. But not have gone through the clinical tests necessary for a recommendation and approval. They may, but not yet.

The medicine used in Ohio is the same medicine being tested, with promise, in Omaha. All are stop-gap as they only lessen the severity of covid-19. What is desperately needed is a vaccine. Basically, it is still too early to tell what ends up working best.

"I'm right a lot". He is the biggest idiot in the room. And nothing demonstrates it more than yesterday's news briefing.

None of the drugs being tested represent a cure. None. A vaccine is needed for that. Indeed, a different drug is being tested at UNMC in Omaha that shows some promise of shortening hospital stays and that would at least free up beds for other sick patients. But that too is still too early. It is a drug that was tried in Ebola treatment where it was actually ineffective and discontinued, as I understand it.

What we don't need is a desperate President seeing his reelection going down the drain imposing a false treatment regiment on the medical community.

Figure 1Steps of the replication of different viruses affected by chloroquine (marked by red rectangles). Chloroquine inhibits the replication of different viruses either at the early or late stages of viral replication.

Chloraquine can have bad side effects. But saying “it’s antibacterial” is irrelevant to the discussion.
