Pence To Be Tested For COVID-19; 'Hundreds Of Millions' Of Face Masks In Production
Source: NPR
Vice President Pence on Saturday announced he and his wife will be tested for the COVID-19 coronavirus, following confirmation that an aide on his staff was diagnosed with the respiratory disease last week.
Pence made the remarks at a news conference following the coronavirus task force meeting at the White House. Earlier in the week the vice president, who leads the task force, told reporters that he has not been tested for the virus because the White House doctor had told him he didn't need to be.
"I'm pleased to report that he is doing well," Pence said of his aide, adding that "he had mild cold-like symptoms for a day and half." Pence explained that all contact-tracing has been completed and neither he nor the president had direct contact with the aide. Regardless, he said, he would undergo testing later in the day.
He also offered the latest figures on the number of Americans who have been tested: More than 195,000 people have been tested, not including those who were tested in county hospitals or health care labs around the nation. Of those, roughly 19,350 have tested positive for the coronavirus, Pence said...

President Trump, who spoke first at the press conference listed steps the administration has taken to fight the spread of the virus, including an order for "hundreds of millions" of face masks and other supplies for health care professionals.
"We started with very few masks and now we're making tens of millions of masks," Trump said after blaming previous administrations for the stockpile shortages the country now faces.
He later stated the government has issued a contract for 500 million N95 masks, saying they are "now" available to hospitals and other health care centers. Part of the demand is being met by the private sector in "sixth gear," he said, which is responding by making masks, swabs and ventilators in lieu of their main industries.

(35,320 posts)The day the guidance cited in the KTLA report was issued.
It's a fluid environment.
The fatality rate's been decreased, for instance. And a couple of reports have indicated there's a correlation between humidity-temperature and transmission rates--which agree strongly with a report out of China from a few weeks ago that tried to ID the optimal transmission temperature China. The rate isn't zero and it's just one effect, so "lower transmission" doesn't mean "it will vanish." It just means lower transmission, and that's pending further reports. It's science: One finding doesn't establish truth, and several findings might easily be overturned through shoddy methodology or because the data overlooked a confounding factor.

(51,574 posts)The higher the temperature and humidity, the lower the transmission? I heard on expert saying there was no evidence of a correlation.

Keep in mind this is for the original SARS virus from 2011, not necessarily Covid-19 but some are saying it should be similar. Interesting reading, regardless.

(5,725 posts)As for Pence and company; let them pray the pestilence away. Donny's a Twitter-cosplay-antivaxxer and he and his toadies should reject any vaccine developed against this. Instead, they should each try out the overdose of malaria treatment that Donny's been flogging. In fact, anyone who's ever worn a MAGA cap or stuck a Trump sign in their front yard should test it.
They will not, of course, because every single one of them is a gutless, egomaniacal shitbag like their God Emperor; all talk and craven cowardice.

(290 posts)Most surgical masks have expiry dates within a year or two. Those N95 masks have an expiration date that maxes out at 3-5 years at most. So Trump can lay not being prepared with a stockpile on his own damn administration.. Also at fault, this adherence to Just In Time inventory mentality has proved useless in the times of pandemics.
