The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases is growing rapidly, with the total known infected doubling in a week to top 316,000 on Sunday. U.S. officials sought medical supplies and moved to expand hospital capacity to prepare for an influx of patients.

Cases in the U.S. alone crossed 27,000, growing 10-fold from a week earlier as a growing number of state leaders ordered residents to stay home as much as possible.

High-profile cases underlined the extent of the spread. Sen. Rand Paul tested positive, his office said, making him the first U.S. senator and third lawmaker to test positive, his office said. The Kentucky Republican is in quarantine and asymptomatic, his spokesman said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in self-isolation after receiving a vaccine on Friday from a doctor who tested positive for the virus, a government spokesman said.
