but I despise the conditions in prisons that hasten the spread of diseases like Covid-19. Punishment is one thing, but this will be a de facto death sentence for many.

They should probably limit prisoner movement and make sure all the kitchen staff are negative or this could be a real problem. Maybe the privatized prisons will realize they don't want their assets to die and do something. Of course, I understand that many of their contracts require states to keep them at a certain capacity or else they have to pay them X amount anyway. So maybe they don't care. Less work for them if they die.
