A sharp increase in confirmed coronavirus cases in New York State on Sunday indicated that the state now accounts for roughly 5 percent of coronavirus cases worldwide.
The jump stemmed from both the rapid growth of the outbreak and a significant increase in testing in the state. Health officials emphasized that testing was revealing how quickly the virus had spread.
There are now 15,168 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state, up 4,812 since Saturday, and 114 deaths, Mr. Cuomo said. About 13 percent, or 1,974 people in New York who tested positive for the virus, were hospitalized, Mr. Cuomo said.
The governor also took issue with what he called the insensitive and arrogant behavior of New York City residents who continued to gather in parks and other public spaces. Mr. Cuomo indicated that he would give the city 24 hours to come up with a plan to reduce density in these spaces, which he would need to approve.

You look at US numbers, you get one impression. You take out the NY numbers, and things look different.
A number of other cities are a few days behind, but their caseload seems to be tracking NY's rise to prominence. Of course, the problem with this is that testing's increased so much that you can't disentangle the increase from testing and the increase from infection. Still, while NY accounted for most US death's today, others' death tolls are increasing.
From "no, we won't have a lock down" to "why don't they take it seriously" in 5 days.
From "no, we won't close schools" to "somebody's seriously irresponsible for not helping us" in 9.

People were coming into the US with the virus when we were only concerned about China. Travelers from China to European countries carried it with them. Americans abroad carried it back with them. None of them aware that they had been exposed and were carrying it.
Trump banned travel from China early on, but noone was thinking about other nations until cases showed up in them. Business travelers from other countries, as well as returning American vacationers, were bringing it to the US before we knew which other countries were threats.
