Hobby Lobby, the craft store chain that is no stranger to controversy, is once again finding itself in hot water for allegedly citing a message from God in its decision to leave stores open amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Though more than 90 retailers in the US have temporarily shuttered in the past week in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus, Hobby Lobby has remained steadfast in staying open for business. On Saturday, digital strategist Kendall Brown tweeted a widely circulated photo of a note allegedly written by Hobby Lobby founder David Green, in which the openly conservative Christian businessman repeatedly mentions the power of God as part of his justification to leave stores open.
In the note to employees, Green reportedly wrote that the decision was informed by a message from God bestowed upon his wife Barbara Green, who he described as a "prayer warrior."
"In her quiet prayer time this past week, the Lord put on Barbara's heart three profound words to remind us that He's in control. Guide, Guard, and Groom," Green reportedly says in the letter. "We serve a God who will Guide us through this storm, who will Guard us as we travel to places never seen before, and who, as a result of this experience, will Groom us to be better than we could have ever thought possible before now."

So, the CEO's wife got a message from God and Hobby Lobby is staying open in defiance of the state of Ohio. Another "religious freedom" bullshit case for the SCOTUS coming up imo.
I e-mailed Hobby Lobby saying the CEO's wife was a liar. These Pharisees need to be exposed. The Christ said that the wealthy have their reward.

We're all swimming in the same pool. If any one of us pisses, we all have to deal with the result.

(21,500 posts)If they want to endanger themselves, I don't care. But they do not have a legal right to endanger others.
The law is clear on this and has already been decided. Religious beliefs must take a back seat when health and safety are endangered. Jehovah's Witnesses do not permit blood transfusions. But in the case of minors, the law steps in to save the child's life because children cannot give consent to reject treatment.
In the case of covid 19, it jeopardizes the health and safety of people of all ages. Hobby Lobby does not have a leg to stand on.
I want to see the response of NY's Governor Cuomo and NY AG Letitia James if they try to pull this stunt in NY. I can just hear Cuomo saying that God told him to shut them down and prosecute.

(16,829 posts)There is no way real Christianity teaches people to endanger the lives of others.
wnylib
(21,500 posts)But they are making a mistake to hide behind phony religious claims on this because even if the belief in a message from God was real, it does not require a court decision to shut them down. Courts have alreafy ruled on this type of situation.

(9,022 posts)People turn back to religion again. That would be a really sad result of this crisis, if we were to see a large wave of religion wash over the US, again. The nones and rational people have made much progress over the last few decades. Shame to see it washed away by fear.

And it's not a virus. They're being pious based in ignorance and exclusion. Who needs that kind of sickness?

(34,076 posts)The statement by Hobby Lobby was made on March 19. The stay-at-home order was issued on March 22.
While Hobby Lobby may well defy the order when it takes effect at 11:59 on 3/23, this article isn't about Ohio, an isn't about defying an order to shut down. It's merely about being stupid.
