Rupert Murdoch Inadvertently Registers As Member Of Controversial ‘Independence Party’
Source: TPM
News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch inadvertently registered for the New York "Independence Party," Crain's New York reports. A spokesman for Murdoch told the business newspaper that the media mogul checked the wrong box on a voter registration form. "I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that this was an error," News Corp spokesman Nathaniel Brown said. "His intention was to register as an 'independent.' "

From the Crain's story this morning, "Murdoch outfoxed by fringe political party":

In a snafu thick with irony, Rupert Murdoch was fooled into joining a minor but controversial New York political party.
The conservative News Corp. billionaire and staunch supporter of Israel is enrolled in the New York Independence Party, whose New York City faction has been linked to anti-Semitic statements. Mr. Murdoch registered as a member of the party two years ago, according to voter registration records.
News Corp. spokesman Nathaniel Brown said Mr. Murdoch had checked the wrong box on a voter registration form.

On his form, however, the "Party enrollment change" box as well as the "Address change" box is checked. Mr. Murdoch had been an unaffiliated voter for 10 years until registering in August 2010 at a $44 million penthouse he'd bought on Fifth Avenue.

Emphasis added.
According to Crain's, now that this story is out, Murdoch will "leave the Independence Party and re-register as unaffiliated."

Off topic but for example if you want to legally get around snctions on Iran then register a company in Switzerland which isn't in the EU and so not subject to the antics of the USA or the EU.

(12,977 posts)Back in 1969, when my husband and I were really pissed about the Vietnam War, we went in to re-register as independents. The woman taking registrations said, "Oh, Independent Party. We don't get many of those." We hastily said, "No, no, that's not what we meant," and it turned out the proper phrase was "No party affiliation."
But if the woman had just taken our information without comment -- or if there had been online registration in those days and we'd been in a hurry -- we could have wound up with a party affiliation we'd never intended.
