Liberal Jill Karofsky defeats conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Daniel Kelly
Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
MADISON - Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky won the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court, narrowing the conservative majority after a tumultuous election conducted in the midst of a global pandemic, according to results released Monday.
Incomplete returns showed her leading, with more results to come from liberal Dane County.
A Karofsky victory would mark the first time in a dozen years that a Supreme Court challenger defeated an incumbent and just the second time in more than half a century. Her win over Justice Daniel Kelly would shift conservative control of the court from 5-2 to 4-3.

(11,991 posts)The fact that technically there was still a presidential nominee race may have brought out more Dem voters (both for Sanders as well as for Biden) than might have come out otherwise, helping Karofksy. (I say ironically because so many of use were saying that Sanders should have already dropped out by then.)

(67,782 posts)The backlash begins - the republicans INSISTED on holding the primary because they thought they had the SC seat in the bag. No such luck.
Remember the blue wave of 2018? This is going to be MUCH bigger!

(8,064 posts)hacking of voting machines like they have proven was done in Florida in 2016. The republicans KNOW this is coming. Amy Klobuchar has co-written with a republican colleague a law to help stop the possibility of this happening, and the house democrats already approved to fund it if it was passed. But the REPUBLICAN SENATE wouldn't bring it to the floor.

I just hope our Appleton mayoral candidate won because his opponent is a real right wing asshole too.

Jill Karofsky, a Dane County Circuit Court judge backed by liberals, has been declared the winner in Wisconsins Supreme Court race following more than a week of high drama and chaos over whether the election should go on amid the fallout from the novel coronavirus.
Karofsky as of 6:50 p.m. had 53.33% of the vote, while her opponent, conservative-backed incumbent Justice Daniel Kelly trailed with 46.67% with 57.3% of precincts reporting.
Mitchell Schmidt | Wisconsin State Journal
If it stands after any potential lawsuits, the result of this election will shrink the conservative majority on the court from 5-2 to 4-3, giving liberals the chance to control the majority of seats in 2023.
Im honored to have earned the trust of people across this state who believe in a tough, fair, and independent judiciary and I promise to never forget those principles as their Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, Karofsky said in a statement.

Shortly after the Associated Press declared Karofsky the winner, Kelly conceded.

Biden victorious as Wisconsin finally releases primary election results https://www.marketwatch.com/story/biden-victorious-as-wisconsin-finally-releases-primary-election-results-2020-04-13?reflink=mw_share_twitter Trump last week broke from health experts and called on his supporters to get out and vote NOW for Kelly. He later said Democrats were playing politics by trying to postpone the election.
As soon as I endorsed him, the Wisconsin Democrats said, Oh, lets move the election two months later, Trump said. Now they talk about, Oh, safety, safety.
