Friday morning, President Donald Trump responded to a planned protest at the Minnesota Governor's Residence over the state's 'stay at home' order aimed at combating COVID-19.
The president tweeted, "LIBERATE MINNESOTA," which is the name used by the event's organizers on social media.
Protesters gathered in front of the governor's residence Friday afternoon. Footage from Chopper 5, which flew above, showed hundreds gathered at the location.
On Facebook, the group planning the protests says, "Thousands of lives are being destroyed right now. It is not the governor's place to restrict free movement of Minnesota citizens! Gov. Walz you work for the citizens of this state! Minnesota's economy must be reopened for business or destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Minnesota citizens and their families may result if we don't act quickly!"
Trump also tweeted about similar movements in other states.

They should be arrested--those without masks and or less than 6 feet away. IMHO

All he does is watch TV. Its incredible. Fox is controlling government policy. He has briefings and intelligence reports yet he easily swayed by whatever is on fox news. Really disturbing

What's going to be really revealing is when Trump tweets something out minutes BEFORE one of these rallies.

(8,844 posts)Okay, fair is fair......how about a million or two of us assemble in front of the White House or U.S. Capital.......
I know, I know, we seriously can't do that without exposing all of us to the others in the crowd.........
Any body else have an equally monstrous idea of what we all could do?????????
Interestingly, nothing is being done by the Police at any of these flash mobs sites, like arresting them all and charging them with Unlawful Assembly, etc. Of course that relies on the premise that the cops are on OUR side, not theirs. I wouldn't want to bet on that from other recent events......

(18,770 posts)With our Governor throughout this situation. He has approached it calmly, methodically and utilizing the many experts he has access to. Because of the we have one of the lowest, if not the lowest, per capita infection rates.
ETA- he also states quite simply how we would be in an even better place if we had adequate support from the Federal government. His matter of fact delivery is more emphatic and condemning than all out accusations would be. He takes the role of the adult.

(70,299 posts)I was not referring to them protesting. sorry, I should have made that clear.
they were taking license plates down and ordering everyone in the household into 14 day quarantine for going to a church service. I agree trying to arrest them during the protest would achieve nothing.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) For a second day in a row, protesters gathered Friday outside the governors mansion in St. Paul, urging Gov. Tim Walz to end the states stay-at-home order.
At noon, dozens of protesters could be seen lining the street in front of the governors residence, holding signs and American flags.
Im a small business owner and my business was shut down forcibly on the 17th of March, and I have yet to see any unemployment, any money come through from the government, one protester told WCCO. Im sitting here waiting here without a paycheck, with no definitive answer on when I will be returning to work, and I dont think thats right.
The group is calling themselves Liberate Minnesota. Their organizers say the states stay-at-home order has gone on long enough and Minnesotans should be able to go back to work.
In a daily briefing Friday, Walz said he respects the right to protest, but those involved need to practice safe social distancing.
I will never stop dissent, but when you are advocating for really reckless behavior, thats a different thing, Walz added.
Protesters say the stay-at-home order has left them feeling shut out of work during this crisis......................................................

(35,356 posts)Maybe it'll get people killed. Maybe not.
It got notoriety because people will somehow assume the Trump tweet triggered today's turnout. That's implausible.
They mostly appear to come from areas with low prevalence of the virus. Unless they interact long enough after being infected by people in the higher-prevalence Lansing, and do significant in-group interacting after they become infectious, it'll be a few cases. The bad hotspots were where a lot of people got together the infected did hugging and such with at least one person who was highly contagious.
I recall a lot of people saying the same thing about spring break in FL. I've seen reports of some clusters of cases, but not the death dealing COVID-19 tsunami predicted. It's not in the data. In many ways, the Miami metroplex resembles Detroit and Chicago. Same sort of thing, first impulse is to say "same sort of cause." Easier than special pleading when nothing special is immediately obvious.

(38,187 posts)then how are they able to be NOT AT HOME, but OUT protesting? Obviously, their "right" to leave the house has not been infringed. I see through them. They are just pitching temper tantrums. They are out of control, childish brats pitching temper tantrums. And they have guns.
And Trump is telling them to use the guns.
This cannot end well, all over nothing. I wish Anonymous would ID the fuckers so they can forever be known for how they have acted by every employer they ever try to get a job from in the future, and for the rest of us, so we can avoid such sniveling, childish, brain damaged people in our daily lives from now on. They are showing who they really are.
