Jacksonville beaches reopen in Florida as states begin easing stay-at-home restrictions

Source: CNN

CNN) — Beaches and parks in Jacksonville, Florida, reopened Friday afternoon as more states consider easing restrictions put in place to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

Crowds at Jacksonville Beach cheered when the barriers came down on the beach, according to CNN affiliate WJXT.

Beaches will be open from 6 to 11 a.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. daily with some restrictions, according to Jacksonville's website. Recreational activities such as running, biking, hiking and swimming will be permitted during this soft reopening, the city's website said.

I think it was the late 50s, or maybe the middle??...It was a pre-season exhibition game between the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. They had these games right before the season begins so it was early April. The Cubs were down by 3 runs bottom of 9th, 2 outs. I said to my friend, no way Cubs can win. I think there was one runner on base. But the Cubs did win. Another got on base, a double scored a run, and the next batter hit a home run with 2 men on base to win the game...Now this was 60 years ago, but I do recall watching that, and thinking, It ain't over till it's over

..The governor of Florida thinks he knows more than the scientists and doctors. He wants to please Trump, so that is what he is doing. Jacksonville Mayor is doing the same thing..Think about this:

...More important to please Trump, than to save some lives...even one life

US coronavirus deaths hits record one-day total of 4,591

Source: The Hill

Thursday marked a new record for coronavirus deaths in the U.S., with 4,591 people dying from the virus in just 24 hours.

The prior record was 2,569 deaths in the U.S. on Wednesday, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

The number of new coronavirus cases on Thursday was approximately the same as Wednesday, with 31,451 new confirmed infections across the country, according to the outlet.

There have been more than 671,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. since the outbreak began in China late last year. There have been more than 33,000 deaths. Around the world, there have been more than 2.15 million cases.

I live in FL and it is just a matter of days before the whole state is opened up. The beaches will be up and running with no restrictions by the end of next week. I believe the number of cases and deaths are underreported. With the elderly population and the fact that the stay at home order was delayed, I don’t see how the numbers could be what they are reported to be. The trumpers here are anxious to “open up” again. Idiots led by an idiot governor.

Story here: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article241882491.html.

I don't trust any of the state's numbers. Florida is the third most populous state but its self-reporting puts it eighth in number of cases and tenth in number of deaths. Considering the disproportionate number of vulnerable (elderly) people in the state and the governor's tardy and negligent response, Florida's stats defy credibility.

For example, Putin claims he has low Covid-19 deaths. But there's been a huge spike in "pneumonia" deaths. The number of cases of pneumonia, which can be caused by coronavirus, increased by 37 percent in Moscow year-on-year in January, according to Rosstat, Russia's statistics agency. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-coronavirus-health-russia-idUSKBN216305

Ok to go to beaches. (under certain restrictions, of course)..Of course, some will not follow those restrictions, so more will die. The governor, Ron De Santis, wants ease restrictions, and so does the mayor of Jacksonville. They want to please Trump, more than save lives..

So, pleasing Trump is more important than saving lives, or listening to scientists and people who have lots of knowledge about contagious diseases.

assuming there is an ICU bed, a ventilator, and the supplies and drugs that go with it. I just saw stories in the past 2 days about both ventilators and drugs -- still running very low

U.S. may get more ventilators but run out of medicine for COVID-19 patients, MPR News, 4/4/20

... This week, Vizient released data showing dramatic spikes in demand for sedatives, pain medications, paralytics, and other drugs that are crucial for patients who are on ventilators. According to Vizient's study, the rate at which those orders are filled is lagging far behind the demand.

One complicating factor: "Injectable drugs take a long time to make," Kistner says. "For instance, there's a 21-day sterility period needed for all injectable drugs. So it's not something simple that you can do overnight."

... a patient in acute respiratory distress, being put on a ventilator can be life-saving. It's also really unpleasant. ... When patients are intubated, they're given strong sedatives and pain medicine such as propofol and fentanyl, and sometimes paralytic drugs, as well.

Without those medications, Morse says, "Most people will reach for the [breathing] tube and try to grab it and pull it out. They may fight against having it in their mouth. And if they're working against a breathing machine it can actually damage their lungs."

Now, with a surge of COVID-19 patients on ventilators, hospitals are burning through their supplies of those essential drugs.

... "The nightmare really is that I won't have enough ventilators to treat them all at the same time," Akers says. "And even if I get them on a ventilator, I won't be adequately able to sedate them to know that they're safe. And my real worry is that a lot of people will die as a result of that."

So anyway, for those fuckwad governors who think the Dow and their beach businesses are more important than human lives, well, there's this to also think about.

And regular people too ... do you really want to risk this hell on earth experience? Like being on a ventilator for 2 weeks is what's needed for many Cov-19 patients, where obviously every second is excruciating.

Edited to add - Here is an article from March 21 -- this is how it is like even with all the drugs available, and all the necessary equipment and personnel:

A Medical Worker Describes Terrifying Lung Failure From COVID-19 -- Even in His Young Patients, Propublica, 3/21/20

Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.”

It’s called acute respiratory distress syndrome, ARDS. That means the lungs are filled with fluid. And it’s notable for the way the X-ray looks: The entire lung is basically whited out from fluid. Patients with ARDS are extremely difficult to oxygenate. It has a really high mortality rate, about 40%. The way to manage it is to put a patient on a ventilator. The additional pressure helps the oxygen go into the bloodstream. “Normally, ARDS is something that happens over time as the lungs get more and more inflamed. But with this virus, it seems like it happens overnight

... The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you’re in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don’t know when someone is trying to help you, so you’ll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning.

... Even if you survive ARDS, although some damage can heal, it can also do long-lasting damage to the lungs. They can get filled up with scar tissue. ARDS can lead to cognitive decline. Some people’s muscles waste away, and it takes them a long time to recover once they come off the ventilator.

More: https://www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients

Yes, they are struggling to breathe even on ventilators at maximum settings (which at high settings are very damaging to the lungs).

And it happens so quickly like overnight from having mild breathing difficulty to lungs filled with fluid and drowning.

They probably drove past five Walmarts packed with thousands of people to get to the beach. I think people have been going to the grocery stores out of boredom since they are open.

All the sidewalks and bike paths have been packed too because people want to get outside and all the gyms are closed, walking on the beach vs. walking a trail doesn’t seem like a much higher risk.

California is also starting to reopen beaches and parks as of yesterday as well.

And that being used against us could be problem too. I am in Vancouver, Canada. Here we are doing okay, as far as flattening the curve. Everyone is practising SD. Limiting store shoppers. Keeping distance. And here, although they have dampened the ability by closing park parking lots, we have never not been allowed to go outside to beaches, parks. While inside centers are closed, beaches and parks are open. There is very little risk outdoors, if you practice SD. From another article on DU:

"Your chances of catching the virus when you go outdoors is extremely low, provided you’re keeping a safe distance from others.

”Outdoors is safe, and there is certainly no cloud of virus-laden droplets hanging around,” said Lidia Morawska, professor and director of the International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

“Firstly, any infectious droplets exhaled outside would be quickly diluted in outdoor air, so their concentrations would quickly become insignificant,” Dr. Morawska said. “In addition, the stability of the virus outside is significantly shorter than inside. So outside is not really a problem, unless if we are in a very crowded place — which is not allowed now anyway. It is safe to go for a walk and jog and not to worry about the virus in the air, and there is no need for an immediate washing of the clothes.”

People need to re-energize and get fresh air. From the OP article:

"Officials aren't afraid to pull the plug on beachgoers if they don't abide by the social distancing rules and beach restrictions, Atlantic Beach Mayor Ellen Glasser said at a press conference Friday."

So it looks like they do have strict rules in place about SD. We can't fall into a trap of hanging onto a Pavlovian response of automatically opposing any movement the other way. Which closing beaches may have been an over-reach in the first days when they didn't understand completely how it was transferred , and/or SD was not an accepted or well known practice yet.

I think there is a danger going forward, that is IF and when this virus is finally under control, Democrats will be painted as extremists the other way. As has been pointed out, California also is relaxing beach usage rules.
