Herbert Lom, Frustrated Boss of Inspector Clouseau, Dies at 95

Source: NYT

Herbert Lom, left, with Peter Sellers in 1976 on the set of "The Pink Panther Strikes Again."

By DAVID BELCHER

Published: September 27, 2012
Herbert Lom, the handsome and versatile Czech-born actor who could play Napoleon Bonaparte or a witch hunter with equal aplomb but who was perhaps best known as Peter Sellers’s frustrated boss in the “Pink Panther” franchise, died on Thursday. He was 95 and lived in London.

His son Alec confirmed his death, The Associated Press reported.

Mr. Lom gained more attention as a reliable character actor than as a suave leading man, although he was both. His deep-set, mesmerizing eyes made him the perfect villain in a series of minor films in the early 1940s, and he went on to excel after World War II and in the 1950s and ’60s in small roles in a variety of genres. In a career of more than five decades he appeared in more than 100 movies and television shows.

He was born Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchacevich ze Schluderpacheru in 1917to upper-class parents in Prague. (Various sources give his date of birth as Jan. 9 and Sept. 11), He became a theater actor and made one movie in his native Czechoslovakia before emigrating to London in 1939, just before the Nazis invaded (and shedding more than 40 letters from his name along the way). His parents survived and later joined him in London, but his girlfriend died in a concentration camp.

1. He was the best thing in the last (proper) PP movie he did.

When he went insane and destroyed the UN to force the world to please kill Clouseau for him. The Oktoberfest sequence is the last great set piece of the PP franchise which really peaked with a Shot in the Dark anyway.

He also was a not half bad Phantom of the Opera. At least he did it without singing.

I especially liked him in The Dead Zone and he was a perfect foil for Sellers.

Rest in peace and thank you.

laughter my family got from those movies; The Pink Panther Strikes Again (where Lom finally loses it) is (IMO) one of the funniest movies ever.

Lom and Sellers were terrific together.

Great comedys.Geofrey Rush who played Peter Sellers In cable film called then the Austin Powers
of their time.I loved The Pink Panther strikes again. My favorate of Clousera films.Lom and Sellers
were great. They should have quit after Sellers died.Trail and curse of the Pink Panther are at least
watchable(deled footage of Sellers from Pink Panther strikes again were the unseen stuff used at begining of trail) but son of the Pink Panther Is just terrable. And to this day I refuse to watch
Steve martin as Clousera.Peter Sellers Is only Clousera worth watching. Now If Mike Meyers would
have been cast maybe I would be tempted to at least once watch It.Meyers work In austin powers film were influenced by Sellers In Panther films and Casino Royale Bond spoof

A Shot In the dark,Return of the Pink Panther,The Pink Panther strikes again these are classic
sellers and Lom.Even Revenge of the Pink Panther Is decent even though they ignored Strikes Again.

His portrayal of Dreyfus makes me smile just thinking about it.

The character wound up in good shape at the end of Roberto Benigni's 'Son of ..' .

Didn't he go all the way back to The Goon Show with Sellers? What a great talent. A good long life too. RIP Sir Herbert.

Wow. I didn't realize he was 95!!! But then time has flown by so fast.

I remember seeing "Return of the Pink Panther" 3 times in the theater back in 1975. That was the first movie that I had ever gone back to see multiple times in the theater. Between him, Sellers, and Christopher Plummer, it was truly a romp.

R.I.P. and I enjoyed your work sir...

Her was one of my favorites. Loved his Dreyfus, but was truly impressed by the depth he brought to the Hammer "Phantom": he was the best part of a rather low-rent film.
Goodbye, Mr. Lom.
