Georgia Democratic lawmaker announces resignation week after endorsing Trump
Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A little more than a week after he announced that he was endorsing President Donald Trump, Democratic state Rep. Vernon Jones announced Wednesday morning that he would not complete his term.
Turn the lights off, I have left the plantation, Jones said in a statement. Someone else can occupy that suite. Therefore, I intend not to complete my term effective April 22, 2020.His spokesman said the Lithonia Democrat would not be seeking re-election.
I dont plan to leave the Democratic Party because somebodys got to be in there to hold them accountable hold them accountable to how they are treating black people (and) root out the bigotry, Jones said on The Rashad Richey Morning Show shortly after announcing his resignation.
...
Im sick and tired of me and my family being attacked and harassed by the Democrat Party for putting my country before my party, Jones said.

(10,054 posts)We need a way better Democrat than Jones in that office.
I endorsed the White guy (Donald J. Trump) that let Blacks out of jail, and they endorsed the White guy (Joe Biden) that put Blacks in jail.

(18,649 posts)That tells me he ran in a predominately AA district as a democrat just to get elected. Claims that he has to guard fellow constituents from the blue party furthers that suspicion.
He's leaving the plantation because the republicans have invited him to don white gloves and work in the mansion.

(1,692 posts)At a black person who would endorse a guy like Trump ( or any republican for that matter, but especially Trump ). Yes, some moderate republicans may not be racist, but they dont get up every morning brimming with compassion for those less fortunate. The Democrat party is the party that has a heart, the republican partys mantra is its all about them and their wallet

(51,726 posts)Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.) referred to opponents of his rabid Communist-hunting tactics as the Democrat Party in the early 1950s, making the phrase briefly toxic. But it subsequently made its way into various Republican Party platforms over the years.

But linguistic expert Paul Thibodeaux says Democrat, used the Republicans way, may grate on listeners for other reasons.
I think that has to do with Democrat being a noun and Democratic being an adjective, said Thibodeaux, a cognitive psychologist at Oberlin College who studies how language influences perception. Republican sort of works as an adjective or a noun. [Saying] Hes a Republican makes more sense than Hes a democratic.
Whats more, he said, the sound of the word Democrat has associations with other words that people dont like: Autocrat. Plutocrat. Bureaucrat.
Not to mention that whole rat thing at the end.

(46,758 posts)him in Central Florida around the nineties. They are Democrats that benefit from playing it both ways. They definitely do reach across the aisle and get played into forgetting what they should stand for. They think they found a middle ground because they are close enough to the benefits of the financial opportunities if they are willing to loosen up on regulation. They completely forget that it's their position that allows them to be first in line. Meanwhile, everybody else will get screwed by their capitulations.

Resigned, yes.
As a black man, he should have known that the response would not be pretty. Go ahead and rout out the racism in the party. It's there, and that's an effort that needs work. But a public endorsement of Trump - you gots to go.
