No Emergency Aid for DACA Students

Undocumented students dealing with campus closures are not eligible for emergency stimulus grants, the Education Department said.

College students who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children aren’t eligible for emergency aid Congress set aside in its stimulus package to help students who have experienced disruptions due to the closure of campuses during the coronavirus epidemic, the Education Department said Tuesday.

The announcement came as the department released more details about how higher education funds in the $2.2 trillion CARES Act stimulus package, approved by Congress last month, can be used.

Beyond excluding so-called DACA students, the department’s attempt to bring more clarity muddled the question of which students can get emergency help, making it even more difficult for colleges to get money in the hands of those who need it, said Terry Hartle, the American Council on Education’s senior vice president for government and public affairs.

The CARES Act had split roughly $12 billion in higher education funding, with half going to colleges and universities to help defray the financial impact of the pandemic on institutions.

OT: A portion of the stimulus money (CARES Act) was set aside to help college students. The fucking evil Trump and Betsy DeVos just announced that no one who's a DACA student can receive any of the aid. Goddamn those two are evil!

Also, if you as an American citizen, married an immigrant who doesn't have a Social Security Number, you are out of luck - you won't be receiving the $1,200 stimulus check.

are just about to have something even worse happen. The SCOTUS will be ruling on the case heard earlier in the Court's year, and will probably dump DACA just before the Fourth of July, right in the middle of the election year.

Pelosi, Schumer, and McConnell had a say. You have a say in electing them. Presumably.

Since everything has to be done by consent, at best there's a (D) caucus conference call of some sort where your Representative--if a Democrat--can bring up something. But that's about it. "Bring it up" is as far as it goes. Don't know how it works in the Senate--if there's a mechanism for letting all 99 other Senators have a say, or just (R) Senators.

Once the leaders have said what they'll do, the pebbles go along with the avalanche or they're told that they hate America.
