McConnell calls for liability protections in next round of coronavirus relief
Source: CBS
Washington Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pushing for liability protections for businesses and hospitals in the next round of coronavirus relief legislation, raising objections from congressional Democratic leaders as lawmakers begin shaping a fourth bill to address the crisis. In a radio interview with Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade on Wednesday morning, McConnell argued that there will be a "second pandemic" of "lawsuits against doctors, nurses, hospitals and brave business people who are opening up."
"We can say the country is opening up, but if people don't come and businesses are afraid to open because of the lawyers that are lurking on the curbside outside their doors, we won't have the reopening we want," McConnell said.
McConnell also said in an interview with Politico on Monday that he was going to "insist" that the next legislative package include liability protection.
However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called McConnell's suggestion "subterfuge" in an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday, claiming that McConnell was trying to make it more difficult to get aid to state and local governments. Democrats have argued that the main priority for the next coronavirus relief package should be bolstering financial support for state governments.

(7,220 posts)No one is going to sue "doctors, nurses and hospitals" that are trying to save their life. That's a red herring.
But if meat-packing plants, for example, call people back to work, and workers who refuse then can't get unemployment, the workers could sue. McConnel wants to make sure average Jane & Joe don't have any recourse.

(22,395 posts)If an employee/customer catches Covid-19 at a business they would be unable to sue for compensation for harm to their health or their untimely death
You are required to go to work under unsafe conditions. You get nothing if you are harmed or die. You assume all the risk.

(23,147 posts)Tell McConnell no deal unless there is language that says - company followed CDC guidelines and death was outside their ability to stop - and they were complying with product recommendations. That way hospitals that made nurses work without proper gear wouldn't get a pass, GA co. would not get a pass because they aren't following CDC guidelines and neither would the state but hospitals that were doing the best humanly possible won't get killed. and IF
there is repayment put into the 500 billion plan and not until they get a complete report of all large business charity to date and Congress appoints an IG to oversee this effort AND
Changes to unemployment so states like GA and FL don't purposefully screw small businesses and workers with their planned sabotage by only opening businesses where pay is quite low and where mainly minorities and women work and change to bk code so anyone can file cpt 7 that is unemployed or loses their business due to CV19 AND
Change to pension plan for post office - after that they will be fine.
Repugs NEED this or will get killed so damn it Dems, play hardball for once.

(43,258 posts)I must say I could be a GREAT businessman if banks would lend me money at no interest, or governments would give money to me, and then eliminate all risk to my business model! Heck, I wouldn't even require insurance. I could just pass the risk along.
So guys, I need $5 million, and I'll make montlly payments of say, $125.00. What d'you say?

If not, maybe he can be the leader of the minority party in 2021.
