30-Year Old Teacher Dies of Coronavirus After Being Denied Test Twice

(7 hrs. ago). The Brooklyn teacher was told she was likely just having a panic attack and was denied testing.
A much-loved 30-year-old middle school teacher has died of COVID-19 after battling the virus for a month. She was initially turned away twice for testing before eventually being diagnosed with the virus. A first-responder told the New York City teacher she was likely experiencing a panic attack before denying her a test on two separate occasions.
Rana Zoe Mungin was a social studies teacher at Ascend Academy in Brooklyn who contracted COVID-19 in mid-March. Mungins family tells ABC News that she had two preexisting conditions: asthma and hypertension. These conditions put her at high risk of developing a severe case of the virus should she contract it. She initially sought treatment when the illness gave her a fever and shortness of breath.
Unfortunately, she was turned away from her local emergency room twice, with one paramedic telling her she believed Mungin was having a panic attack despite the fact that Mungin told him several times she couldnt breathe. Her sister, Mia, tells PIX11 she tried to get her sister the best treatment possible.
Mungin was finally admitted to Brookdale Hospital on March 20, almost a full week after her first attempt to get treatment and tested for coronavirus. When she was admitted, she was having severe trouble breathing and was immediately intubated and put on a ventilator...

...Mia Mungin, a registered New York City nurse, has been chronicling her sister's journey across social media for more than a month, and said "she fought a long fight but her body was too weak." It is with heavy heart that I have to inform you all that my sister Rana Zoe Maybe has passed away today at 12:25pm due to COVID-19 complication. She fought a long fight but her body was to weak. 😞😪 mia mungin (@MiaMungin) April 27, 2020
"Racism and health disparities still continues [and] the zip code in which we live still predetermines the type of care we receive," Mia Mungin wrote on Facebook about the racial disparities in the health care system and the care received by her sister, who was black.
Rana Zoe Mungin taught at Ascend Academy in East New York, Brooklyn, an area of New York City that's among the hardest-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, according to data from the state's health department. She was a first-generation college student who received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wellesley College and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in Creative Writing.
Her case echoes startling data released by the CDC showing that African Americans are being severely impacted by COVID-19 nationwide, accounting for 30% of coronavirus cases in the U.S. despite only comprising approximately 13% of the population...

'Just a panic attack' was deliberate dismissal, racist, sexist and tragic.

(160,601 posts)It's about time these fools snapped out of their delusion racists actually get to rule the world, even if their filthy "President" believes it.
They are building a record against themselves they will never overcome once they cannot run faster than their consciences, which will eat them alive.
The suffering they cause Ms. Mungin is shocking. She had to live with a death sentence hanging over her head as she was scorned, and abused and finally killed by their ignorance, worthlessness.

(41,170 posts)(ABC News)..."Wellesley College President Dr. Paula Johnson, founder and former executive director of the Connors Center for Women's Health and Gender Biology as well as chief of the Division of Women's Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital, called the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on black and Latinx families a "moral and systemic failure."
Just appalling, the casual, too common dismissal and intentional misdiagnosis of people in need based on racist and sexist factors, income level.

If hospitals are not allowing people in, how can they suggest that hospitals should let them in EARLIER?!?!?

(41,170 posts)going on and news, I didn't realize there was a larger pattern of this dysfunction.
Should never have happened, such an outrage and terrible loss.
Here's an article with more (Fox) but it emphasizes how much she cared for others. I sensed she didn't have a partner or children and that is likely correct. Sometimes it can make a difference but shouldn't...
