U.S. Republicans push for coronavirus lawsuit immunity for business

Source: Reuters

The top Republicans in the U.S. Congress displayed a united front on Friday in their drive to include coronavirus-related liability protections for businesses, saying such measures will be crucial to talks about future relief legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House of Representatives Republican leader Kevin McCarthy issued a joint statement redoubling their demands that “Americans on the front lines of this fight must receive strong protections from frivolous lawsuits.”

“Senate and House Republicans agree these protections will be absolutely essential to future discussions surrounding recovery legislation,” they said.

The statement marks a hardening line of demarcation between Republicans and Democrats over the question of business liability as the two sides spar over the prospects of a new coronavirus relief package. Democrats are pushing for nearly $1 trillion in federal assistance to states and local governments.

I can understand protecting businesses from the actions of a political party that recklessly endangers the public to serve their political/economic interests.

8. The immunity is tied to denying unemployment benefits to the workers.

You were laid off. You’re now on unemployment. In most states, once your employer calls you back to work you must go back to work. Failure to return to works counts as your turning down work, and that disqualifies you from getting UI benefits.

Now, if an employer is worried that his employees might get sick by returning to work prematurely, and that they might well sue them for endangering their lives, they may think twice about calling workers back prematurely. They might make return to work conditional on the employee’s level of fear.

But if the government indemnifies the employer by making legal action impossible, they are incentivized to call their workers back, knowing that any who refuse work will not be coming after them if the government stops their UI benefits.

Pelosi going along with that. Yes I see the other side too where corporations want protection against covid 19 lawsuits. But the optics for the GOP looks awful where the american worker has no recourse if they risk their lives to come out to work, get the virus and then their employer says...tough luck. ???. Just keeps getting worse.

IF? - If employers provide full health coverage for medical treatment for coronavirus and sick pay?

After all, aren't they saying it's not much of a risk?
