Senate leader Mitch McConnell to MLB commissioner Rob Manfred: 'America needs baseball'
Source: USA Today
While Major League Baseball, the NBA and other sports authorities say they'll take cues from health experts before playing ball again, they continue receiving external pressure from government figures to step back in the arena.
This time, it was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell applying the heat.
McConnell, the 78-year-old Kentucky Republican, said in a Thursday interview with a Louisville radio station that he called MLB commissioner Rob Manfred recently and asked how and when baseball might return.
"I called the commissioner of baseball a couple weeks ago and said, America needs baseball. Its a sign of getting back to normal. Any chance?" McConnell told Drew Deener and Jason Nemes of 93.9 FM. "As you may have heard there is discussion about having an abbreviated season beginning around the Fourth of July where teams would either play in their spring training sites in Arizona or Florida or play at home to largely empty stadiums. Theres an active discussion underway to salvage part of baseball season."

(1,915 posts)This was the problem with the nba finishing their season. A plan was to gather up all the players send them to vegas lock them down and let them play games without fans. let them have their playoffs.
the one thing that is a non starter is testing. my guess is that the adminstration has assured the nba that it will provide as many tests as they need to test the players and the everyone else around them. all it takes is one infected person to get in there and all the players could get hit so constant testing will be needed for the players over the next 2 months.
now the optics. what will it look like for millionaire players to have access to unlimited tests to get them to play so they can make money for the billionaire owners......while everyday americans still cant get tested? first responders actual sick people?
the optics of that would be damaging to any of the sports leagues.
thats why im sure the nba and mlb and the nfl are all telling the trump people that as soon as every american can get tested, they will get back to work. they cant seem to be above average americans.
and im sure trump is blowing a bunch of hot air up their asses telling them trust him plenty of beautiful tests are coming for all americans but you guys should get back to work now.....and i am guessing that the owners arent buying his horseshit.
these guys are probably coming to the realization that trump has no intention of doing massive testing, he is going to cost them all billions of dollars and their only recourse right now is a new president.

(21,362 posts)about how he alone brought the country back. Let's see if millionaires are willing to risk their lives for Trump?
In 2 to 3 weeks the deaths in Florida, Georgia, and Texas are going to mount. Well, maybe not Florida, they are hiding their deaths from the public.
I see that Trump fired the health IG who made him look bad by saying we didn't have enough medical supplies. Baseball will further help covering up such events.

(9,426 posts)Maybe he has a uniform like Chris Christie? I'd like to see chinless Mitch in that! Christie looks like Tweedle Dee in his uniform. One of my favorite photos of him. Somehow, I can not picture Moscow Mitch playing ANY game, or even wearing anything other than a suit. Hey, Mitch what America needs is COMPETENT, adult leadership. Oh, and millions of test kits too. You might suggest having those daily briefings that tRump does not read, read out to him on Fox in the mornings? Maybe THAT would register since nothing else does.

(30,745 posts)Black Americans are dying in large numbers. Many athletes are black.
Latin American players are prominent in baseball. They see how brown people are treated by trump.
Will the commissioners and owners bow to pressure? Will the players go along with that? All they need is for some beloved sports stars to die of the virus. You might get away with causing the deaths of ordinary Americans and immigrants who work in meat processing plants, trump and mcturtle. But this might be a step too far.
Back to normal? There is no normal as long as trump and mcturtle are running things.
Yes, kill our sports icons. Just try it.

(65,076 posts)POC appear to be more susceptible to CV19 due to systemic issues, including inferior health care infrastructure.
These infrastructure issues do not exist for professional athletes. Their access to strong medical care is abundant.
Also, the potential for high human density living is more prominent among POC. (Likely an outcome of economic disenfranchisement.)
Professional athletes tend to live in lower density situations. Even if, for instance, player's mom & dad live with them, player, spouse, a couple kids and 2 grandparents is 6 people in an 8,000 square foot house.
Residential density is 1,333 sq. ft. per person. That 33% more than my wife & I.
So, I don't think what is going on with CV with regard to POC applies to this population, no matter their ethnicity.

They've got good reasons.

(13,058 posts)are generally very well paid and have access to good health care. So I doubt if professional athletes who are POC are at more risk than anyone else. But having said that I do think it is too early to start up professional sports again.

(17,931 posts)What MLB DOESN'T need are massive outbreaks centered on their ball games. No fans in the stands? OK, but that still puts players, staff and support at risk. If only one big name player contracts Covid and crashes, it will be a public relations disaster and a moral debacle of biblical proportions. Ain't happening, turtle boy. I figure MLB will sit this one out until Donnie's federal government gets it's head out of its collective ass and does what's necessary to control this outbreak.

(21,362 posts)A lot of people put their heads together to come up with a plan to reopen baseball but we can't come up with a plan to get everyone PPE, or can't come up with a plan to test everyone.

(66 posts)However, I find it curious that the massive money-motivated owners and administrators are more cautious and willing to take the financial hit of suspending or cancelling many more months than common industries.
Do they care about the health of their fans packed into stadiums? Seems so.
Clearly they want their investments in athletes protected. Part of that is strong union representation if the players felt the risk was too great.
They are doing this for what appear to be the right reasons and they are much further away from resuming seasons than ordinary stay-at-home orders and CDC milestones. What does MLB know that might be inconvenient to others?
McConnell and 45 want the victory of normalcy. They can't intervene and its killing them.
Anyway, I mourn baseball. It's the one thing I wish I had to help get through. Way more than any backward idiot who can't ride a jetski in April or get a tattoo. But, I trust that baseball is doing the right thing. You won't see me storming my capitol for it.

(12,586 posts)This could the the companion to Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of "Stupid Things Trump Said During the Pandemic."
It would include such gems as:
"America needs baseball. Its a sign of getting back to normal. Any chance?" - Moscow Mitch
"No one reached out to me and said, as a senior citizen, Are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren? And if thats the exchange, Im all in." - Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
"This is Covid-19, not Covid-1, folks. You would think that people charged with the World Health Organization facts and figures would be on top of that." - Kellyanne Conway
Anything that came out of the mouth of Jared Kushner.
And of course, the Quote of 2020 (at least during the first four months):
"[W]hen you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done." - Donald Trump
