Vermont State Police said they are investigating an incident after a report that a black man was told to leave the state last week while driving near his residence in Hartford.
The man was driving in his car, which has New York license plates, with his 11-year-old son when he was flagged down by two unknown vehicles, police said in a release Wednesday.
Police said the man stopped, thinking someone needed assistance, and spoke with a white man who told him he was not wanted in Vermont and told to leave, police said.
There were significant racial undertones to the interaction, police said, adding that the man was in fear for the physical safety of him and his son.

(4,126 posts)What police are investigating is an incident but they cant pass up a chance to make people think a black man is being investigated.
Language - more powerful than most people realize.

Same thing goes for rape, which I see referred to as "sexual misconduct" or even "unwanted sex". The AP even had an article that used the phrase "physically aggressive unwanted sexual encounter"...

(18,470 posts)Some of you probably won't like this but I was concerned that just looking at license plates would lead to harassment of people who hadn't been in NY in quite a fucking while.

(18,470 posts)I did not cheer when Raimondo was doing it because I saw some very serious issues with "judging people by their plates." Such as a resident of her state getting harassed because they had a rental with New York plates that hadn't even been in New York for quite a while. If someone is driving a rental because their vehicle was wrecked in an accident having that would be piling on. I once drove a rental in Minnesota that had New York plates and I'm willing to wager it had been a while since that particular vehicle had actually been in New York.
I've said before I'll be five days dead before I trust politician with any emergency powers. We have got to be careful with them because the temptations for even the most well meaning public officials would be very, very high.
