Fred Willard, 'Best in Show' and 'A Mighty Wind' Actor, Dead at 86

Source: Rolling Stone

Fred Willard, the prolific comic actor and master of the mockumentary genre who stood out in ensemble comedies like Best in Show, For Your Consideration and This Is Spinal Tap, died Friday at the age of 86.

Willard’s rep Glenn Schwartz confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, adding that the cause of death was natural causes. Willard’s daughter Hope Mulbarger said in a statement, “My father passed away very peacefully last night at the fantastic age of 86 years old. He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end.We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, wife of Willard’s longtime director Christopher Guest, first shared news of the actor’s death.

“How lucky that we all got to enjoy Fred Willard’s gifts,” Curtis tweeted. “He is with his missed Mary now. Thanks for the deep belly laughs Mr. Willard.” Willard’s wife of 40 years, Mary, died in 2018.

His line from Best in Show about an unruly dog "He went after he like she was made out of ham" had me laughing till I got the hiccups.

Couldn't find that clip but here's another showing him being hilarious in that role:

Fred was very involved with Firesign Theater and that he was a voice in many skits.

Whatever, he was iconic in the many phases of comedy over several decades whether he was in front of or behind the camera.

He excelled at these smaller roles. I was really surprised at his age. Even though I'd seen him on shows and in movies for most of my life, he always seemed so youthful.

I got to work with Fred Willard once. He improvised this hipster from Cab Calloway's band who saw The Wizard of Oz high. The shoot was 3 hours. You see a glimmer of his imagery here, but watching him spin it as long as he did was hilarious and astounding.

America Tonite or something like that. It was a satire of late night talk shows. Used to think it was funny as hell back then but maybe it was because we always got stoned when watching.

The highlight of my professional and personal life was writing Fred Willard as Donald Trump’s father speaking to us from Hell. I can’t believe ABC let us do this. He rehearsed ONE time for this and then did it live.

A year later we did it again, this time for a special episode, and once more Fred portrayed the President’s dead dad in “the bowels of hell.” His delivery of “Oh how I wish I could say those words and make them true” made a meal out of a throw away line.

A Mighty Wind to watch again. It at least, and others, like Best in Show, will hopefully live forever.

RIP dear Fred.

I do not necessarily believe that a given contestant's performance in answering I.Q. testing questions on that show is a true reflection of I.Q. However, if Fred did in fact provided the answers for which he was credited, he certainly possessed a very bright mind.

As an aside, I will mention that Fred conveyed grace and humility in that appearance.
