TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan cannot accept becoming part of China under its one country, two systems offer of autonomy, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday, in a strong rejection of Chinas sovereignty claim, but called for talks so that both sides could coexist.
In a speech after being sworn in for her second and final term in office, Tsai said relations between Taiwan and China had reached an historical turning point.
Both sides have a duty to find a way to coexist over the long term and prevent the intensification of antagonism and differences, she said.
Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party won Januarys presidential and parliamentary elections by a landslide, vowing to stand up to China, which claims Taiwan as its own and says it would be brought under Beijings control by force if needed.

The Taiwanese have been watching it very closely since the 1997 handover.
I completely understand why Taipei doesn't trust them.

Not only have they become more authoritarian they have exported censorship around the world because everyone wants access to the Chinese market.
Hollywood now has to censor their movies to exist in the Chinese market.
The NBA is kowtowing to China right now. One league official expressing support for protesters and China cut of access.
The EU is now softening its criticism on how China responded to COVID.

When Beijing makes a promise assume they are lying. Why do you think Trump and Xi get along?

(5,537 posts)The People's Republic of China has never controlled the island and the fact is the Taiwan is an independent nation. I would say it is hilarious that the world is following the One China policy but then I think of the Uighurs and Tibetans and remember there is nothing funny about imperial China and the way it suppresses minorities. It is only going to get worse with China enforcing its absurd nine-dash line policy in the South China Sea in order to steal resources from its neighbors. If Taiwan decides it wants to be recognized as a full country the U.S. should be the first to step up.
