De Blasio Vows for First Time to Cut Funding for the N.Y.P.D.
Source: The New York Times
Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday pledged for the first time to cut the citys police funding, following 10 nights of mass protests against police violence and mounting demands that he overhaul a department whose tactics have caused widespread consternation.
The mayor on Sunday declined to say precisely how much funding he planned to divert to social services from the New York Police Department, which has an annual budget of $6 billion, representing more than 6 percent of Mr. de Blasios proposed $90 billion budget.
Mr. de Blasio said the details would be worked out with the City Council in advance of the July 1 budget deadline.
Were committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services, that will happen literally in the course of the next three weeks, but Im not going to go into detail because it is subject to negotiation and we want to figure out what makes sense, Mr. de Blasio said.

Asked whether they would back cuts in funding for police departments, 65 percent of Americans said no. Just 16 percent said yes a number that held steady across party lines, with Democrats at 16 percent, Republicans at 15 percent and independents at 17 percent.
Reform, reorganization, and cleaning out the police force of racist cops is one thing, but I do not think this will go very far

(13,043 posts)It's time they're reigned in. Police take oath to serve and protect the public, NOT to inflict brutality upon citizens.

(2,343 posts)defund but push reform for law enforcement, it could be THE signature issue for 2020. People are clearly passionate as evidenced in the massive protests. We are going to see these protests go on for a long time, and they are spreading beyond the large cities. Here in my corner of Arkansas, weve already seen protests in two small towns (approx population of 70k each), and over 1,000 showed up for each. I think well see them spread to more purple and red states.
Just imagine Biden starts showing up at these massive protests, and it could rival anything Trump puts together. Then, when Biden tabs his VP, she can do the protest rallies herself.
Maybe a good idea.

(47,501 posts)show up for a guy selling loosie cigarettes, definitely needs to cut back on their police department. So many videos I've seen in the last few years show an excessive amount of police showing up for very minor situations. Bored, idle cops are often easy to trigger. A lot of this money would be better spent elsewhere. The same with a lot of our prisons. Use that money for community programs and real rehabilitation.
