Oregon Stops COVID Reopenings: Tight Rules Remain In Multnomah County

Source: Oregon Public Broadcasting

After approving 31 Oregon counties for Phase 1 reopening four weeks ago and then allowing 26 of those counties to open further to Phase 2 last week, Gov. Kate Brown is slamming the brakes on further relaxing of rules she put in place to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Her decision comes the same day that the Oregon Health Authority announced the most new cases in a single day since the start of the pandemic, and on the eve of Multnomah County’s desired move to Phase 1. Of 178 new confirmed or presumptive cases announced statewide Thursday, nearly a quarter were in Multnomah County.

In a statement released Thursday night, as residents and business owners in Multnomah County were hoping to advance into Phase 1, Brown declared a “pause” of any status changes.

“In order to ensure that the virus is not spreading too quickly, I am putting all county applications for further reopening on hold for seven days,” Brown said in a statement. “This is essentially a statewide ‘yellow light.’ It is time to press pause for one week before any further reopening.”

Just today at the hardware story here in Portland Oregon some guy tried to get in without a mask.
He really was incredulous that only masked customers were allowed in. I was so glad he left and it did not turn violent.

I am amazed how many people in my area alone not wearing mask or paying attention when they get too close in stores let alone following the arrows in isles.

In grocery store aisles. The ones in our store are too similar to the spacing signs for the checkout lanes.

We need to put up a new pole and light on a timer in our back yard. The old pole is no longer any good, and the light has stopped working.

It was okay when he was outside looking at things.

He came into the house to replace a switch. He was not wearing a mask, and we got close to him. We were not thinking about it, because we were in our own house. Now I am going to worry for the next two weeks. The guy was basically a stranger. He should have had a mask. We should have said something.

4. People are interpreting "Phase 1" as "back to normal"

This is why our fear of a "second wave" is premature. We're not even past the first wave yet.

Furthermore, the mass media isn't helping. It breathlessly hypes the loosening of restrictions in the same way, hoping to juice their advertising sales. The tattoo parlor/yoga studio/gym/massage parlors/bars and all the other not-really-that-necessary "businesses" hound the governors to step on the gas too early and the newspapers and broadcast stations are eager to fill their unsold ad slots. The fundies were even able to pressure Inslee in Washington to give a "special exemption" to churches, allowing them to pack them in too soon.
