San Jose: Public Health Officer Sara Cody receiving threats over her handling of coronavirus
Source: The Mercury News
SAN JOSE Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara Countys public health officer who has faced criticism for her cautious approach to lifting stay-at-home orders, has also been the target of personal threats.
We are aware of the threats made against Dr. Cody and it is under investigation, Santa Clara County Sheriffs Sgt. Michael Low said in a statement Tuesday.
[...]
In an interview Tuesday, Cody did not address the threats specifically, but said weve all taken more heat than we usually take. I try as much as possible to keep my head down.
Cody is credited with leading the Bay Area-wide shelter-in-place order in mid-March the first in the country and days ahead of Gov. Gavin Newsoms statewide order. When Newsom began loosening restrictions on church services and hair salons statewide at the end of May, however, Cody cautioned that he was moving too fast and Santa Clara County would proceed more cautiously.

The title is missing "closures" in the end due to character limits.
To quote Jimmy Buffett, "some people claim that there's a woman to blame." It seems that women are the targets of violent threats by the Karens and Chads of the country in response to shelter in place orders. See also: Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and AG Dana Nessel, Orange County, CA Chief Health Officer Dr. Nichole Quick, and now Sara Cody.

(17,390 posts)Dr. Cody is not the only one. Trump's supporters have made such threats to try influence policy in favor of reopening.
Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act (Pub. L. No. 107-52) expanded the definition of terrorism to cover ""domestic,"" as opposed to international, terrorism. A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act "dangerous to human life" that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping.

She was already at odds with county commissioners, who were pushing to loosen public health restrictions in late May, against her advice. She had previously clashed with them over data releases and control and had haggled over a variance regarding reopening businesses.
But she reasoned that standing up for public health principles was worth it, even if she risked losing the job that allowed her to live close to her hometown and help her parents with their farm.
Then came the Facebook post: a photo of her and other health officials with comments about their weight and references to armed citizens and bodies swinging from trees. The commissioners had asked her to meet with them the next day. She intended to ask them for more support. Instead, she was fired.

(51,736 posts)Local Republican crackpots threatened our health director at her house over her mandatory mask order. She quit. Then the Republican-dominated Board of Supervisors rescinded her mandatory mask order. All this while the number of people with Covid-19 in Orange County hospitals has been steadily increasing. This refusal to follow science is literally costing Americans their lives.

The host of The Ingraham Angle also urged President Donald Trumps campaign to ignore the alarmist COVID drivel ahead of his planned indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Public health officials have warned Saturdays event at the 19,000-capacity BOK Center could prove catastrophic in spreading the virus that has now killed more than 118,000 people nationwide. But Ingraham, a staunch defender of Trump, argued the warnings were bunk.
She mocked Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and member of the White House coronavirus task force, for an interview with Britains Daily Telegraph in which he warned that we could get back to some degree of normality within a year or so, but I dont think its this winter or fall.
