(1,182 posts)but I saw him on one of the late night talk shows maybe 20 years ago ... and he was doing the old "America, love it or leave it" spiel ... I lost a lot of respect for him, and he only got more political and angry with time.

(4,589 posts)Once he became a vocal right-wing imbecile, I couldn't listen to it anymore.
I don't watch James Woods movies either. I suppose the stupidity of the artist just ruins it for me.
But I hope Charlie is sippin' moonshine in a better place, where he will learn to be a better person.

(4,589 posts)Did someone try to silence Charlie Daniels' political views?
Didn't think so.

(13,058 posts)And I didn't say that anyone has tried to silence his political views. I am just saying that when I listen to music I don't look up an artist's political views first before deciding if I can listen or not.

(12,132 posts)I listen to a lot of metal and there is some pretty fucked up shit in metal.
But there are enough great bands that don't worship nazis or hate black people or bash gay people that I have enough to listen to without ever needing to rely on tunes that might be good but are from despicable people. I won't willingly listen to that white power shit and I will stop listening and purge my collection if I find out someone is like that.
To quote Barney Greenway (who was quoting Jello Biafra), Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

(12,132 posts)But sometimes people who make those kinds of songs also make songs about everyday stuff that have nothing to do with politics or any ideology. I still won't listen to them.

(11,351 posts)then, upon some further reflection (and growth?), I came to the realization that there are some lines that just can't be crossed. And I'm perfectly comfortable with the idea that my lines might be different from someone else's. But "politics" includes some views and content that are just so extreme and noxious -- that, no, I can't put aside the source content -- and just enjoy the art. If Stalin (or Jim Jones?) wrote sensitive poetry -- nope, it still just doesn't work.
Charlie Daniels was a bit more than just your typical dip-shit redneck (2 for a dozen in his genre) -- and probably a bit less than a true flag waving Nazi ... But somewhere in between those two points is where you have to decide whether the art has become tainted by the artist. And like I said, you're free to draw a different line than I do -- but I've come to the conclusion that there IS a line.

(13,058 posts)But I would have assumed I guess that he would have been at least somewhat right wing being an older white man from the South. But I have no reason to believe that his views came anywhere near Nazism

(11,351 posts)My reference to "Nazi" was to illustrate an (extreme) point on the continuum -- when it would intellectually dishonest (for me) to trot out the "art separate from the artist" rationale. At certain points of unsavory and toxic belief -- that argument just doesn't stand up.
I'm sorry if that point wasn't made clear in the first post.
And, while neither you nor I attempt to pin the "N" label on Mr. Daniels -- many of his (clearly articulated) views and opinions -- were quite unsavory and toxic. If you were unaware of this perhaps you should acquaint yourself.

(5,507 posts)I don't have to agree with everyone and as long as it doesn't enter their art it isn't relevant.

(957 posts)Saw him live for the Full Moon Album Tour back in 80 or 81 at Market Square arena in Indy. Still the most pot I've ever seen at a indoor concert. Passing joints up and down rows, was a lot of fun. I was a high school freshman or sophomore. Loved his music back then. Hated what he turned into later. He became opposite of what he sung about. He just became the old man yelling get off my lawn.
