Joy Reid Takes Nightly Anchor Slot at MSNBC
Source: NYT
Joy Reid, who rose to television fame as a sharp critic of President Trump and commentator on liberal politics and race, will become the host of a new nightly show on MSNBC, the network plans to announce on Thursday, placing her among a handful of Black women to anchor an American evening news program.
Ms. Reid, 51, who has hosted the MSNBC weekend talk show AM Joy since 2016, will move to the 7 p.m. hour on July 20. Her show, The ReidOut, succeeds Hardball and its host, Chris Matthews, who was forced to resign in March after a series of on-air gaffes and accusations of sexist behavior in the workplace.
Ms. Reids promotion is a significant programming move by Cesar Conde, the new chairman of NBCs news networks. Black women, including Gayle King of CBS and Robin Roberts of ABC, hold leading roles in morning and daytime television, but none currently host a nightly evening show on a major network. The last to do so was Gwen Ifill, who co-anchored PBS NewsHour until shortly before her death in 2016.
In an interview on Wednesday, Ms. Reid cited Ms. Ifill and two other Black anchors, Deborah Roberts and Carole Simpson, as role models.

(129,169 posts)and after a year they ended that show and started shuffling black folk out of their main schedule and moved her to weekends along with Al Sharpton.
She was the only one on MSNBC who could actually stun Tweety into silence by outtalking him. I know she has had some serious issues in terms of past commentary and perspectives the past 5 or so years, but am hoping she can put it behind her and make the most out of that time slot with this upcoming election.

(2,657 posts)I was really hoping that a woman would get the Chris Matthews slot. Getting a talented woman of color like Joy is even better.

(32,659 posts)I'm happy that Joy Reid has been given the nod to take over Chris Matthews' slot. She has worked hard for it, and it's good to see a woman of color in one of the top slots at MSNBC. Her intelligence and bright demeanor will be a nice addition to the regular lineup.
Congratulations Joy! Good luck in your new position.

(1,887 posts)Joy is so gutsy. I loved her interview with Pelosi last night. Joy went straight to the news about the distribution of
money set aside for small businesses and ended up with politics as usual.

(2,065 posts)The thing I really hated about Chris Matthews was how he "headed everyone off at the pass" by constantly interrupting them. How rude! I don't think I ever saw Chris Matthews let a guest finish what they were saying.

(14,887 posts)That is the 7:00 pm slot on the west coast. If she is in Tweety's old time that's 4:00 pm and she will not be re-run after 9.

(7,432 posts)if she can muzzle her impatience, her anger, and her arrogance. She has to place those qualities into her off-air time activities. It takes discipline. She can do it. She can channel those parts of herself when she writes books.

(43,433 posts)about being hacked in order to cover for her homophobic posts. All she had to do was come clean and apologise, but instead she lied through her teeth and has never retracted the lies. Very poor choice indeed. So disappointed with MSNBC. This really is a stain on the network and its integrity. I can never trust this serial liar who quite possibility is still a homophobe as well.
