Harley-Davidson eliminating 700 jobs, Chief Financial Officer John Olin has left the company
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Harley-Davidson Inc. says it is eliminating 700 jobs this year, as part of its comprehensive effort to rebuild the company.
Chief Financial Officer John Olin, who has been with Harley 17 years, has left the company. Treasurer Darrell Thomas will assume Olins duties as interim CFO, the company said in a news release.
"Significant changes are necessary and we must move in new directions," Jochen Zeitz, chairman, president and CEO said in the release.
The changes are part of Harleys overall efforts called Rewire. About 200 of the 700 positions being eliminated are already vacant, according to the company, and the remaining 500 will be phased out this year.

(43,206 posts)in 1983 Reagan raised tariffs ten-fold on foreign motorcycles.
How many salvations is this for Harley-Davidson?

In 1981, an investor group led by Beals bought the company from AMF. That move, and the government protections, were seen as key factors in a legendary turnaround for the motorcycle manufacturer.
Reagan ordered a tenfold increase in tariffs on heavyweight motorcycles, almost all of which were then imported from Japan. In the first year of a five-year program, tariffs rose from 4.4 percent to 49.4 percent on all large highway motorcycles. The duties were then scaled back in successive years to 39.4 percent, 24.4 percent, 19.4 percent and 14.4 percent.

I had a Honda already, so didn't affect me.
I think mine was a 650, so might not have anyway.

(32,698 posts)Getting hard to sell used HDs. Young folks are not into the loud, slow bikes. Their stock has been falling to years.
Those Bikers For Trump are already mad. A week or two ago Harley dropped a dealer in Tenn. for a racist post on FB by that dealer. I guess they are trying to follow NASCAR. Adapt or die.

(9,990 posts)I know a Honda rider (and skilled machinist) who will cut stock Harley (or other M/C) exhausts apart, and modify or remove baffles to bring them near legal maximum on noise! Despite the fact that he charges more for for a set of his modified mufflers, that the price of a good aftermarket "pipe".
His "claim to fame" is that the exhaust is NOT more efficient, or freer flowing, when he's had his way with it! Thus preventing the need for carburetor/Injection "re-jetting" or "tuning". Plus it retains the stock appearance, as many states try to keep everything "OEM" in their regulations.

(2,958 posts)is their motto. If their loud, car drivers can here them and be aware of their presence.
That said, I wonder how many own a loud bike for safety purposes or just to piss people off.

The noisy thing now sits in the garage untouched for over a year.

(4,588 posts)All the Harley bikers do not wear helmets and have loud-ass pipes. If they had brains in their heads to comprehend safety, they would wear helmets. The loud pipes are just to piss people off.

(3,256 posts)After he sent the protype to HD they said it wasn't loud enough so it got redesigned and lost six horsepower. And no loud pipes are not safer. The danger is in front of you usually and the sound is behind you.

I give the guy's house the finger every morning while driving to work. It's stupid, I know, but it makes me feel better.
If you love your motorcycle more than you love humanity, well, I'm sorry, I couldn't care less how much you cry in your beer.
