As COVID-19 Toll Soars, Trump Brags About Bringing 'Back' Incandescent Light Bulbs

The president again turned a White House news conference into a campaign speech, but this one left plenty of people on Twitter gobsmacked.
In another rambling, campaign-style speech, President Donald Trump boasted at a Thursday news conference about bringing back incandescent light bulbs while failing again to offer a plan to stem the record-breaking wrath of COVID-19.
Trump also bragged about stopping the egregious abuse of the Clean Water Act when he last year rolled back pollution protections for the nations waterways.
When I signed that legislation I had many farmers and construction workers standing behind me; people that havent cried since they were a baby, he said. Some of them never even when they were a baby, and they were crying. We gave em back their life.
As for the incandescent lightbulbs, which Trump apparently considers a highlight of his administration, he noted: I brought em back. They have two nice qualities: Theyre cheaper and theyre better. They look better, they make you look so much better. Thats important to all of us.
Incandescent bulbs never vanished and werent brought back. Trump did eliminate energy efficiency standards for many common lightbulbs, but incandescent bulbs have largely been replaced by cheap, long-lasting and efficient LED bulbs. Trump, however, claimed the old-style bulbs are selling like hotcakes.............................

Trump has often mentioned occasions when BIG, STRONG MEN were brought to tears in his presence.,

(23,160 posts)You can't buy original 60W, 75W or 100W old school bulbs, and nobody wants them. They've been replaced with modernized higher-efficiency modified spectrum incandescents that look the same, produce the same color light and last longer and cost a reasonable price, plus there are oodles of options for even higher efficiency LED and compact fluorescents.
He's so full of shit he reeks. There simply are no changes in light bulb availability since he made his changes, and nobody cares because THERE'S NO DEMAND FOR THE OLD BULBS OF YESTERYEAR. Nobody wants to heat up their homes and spend more on electricity with extremely low-efficiency bulbs.
This is all bluster and bullshit. There's not even the slightest shred of truth to his claims about incandescents. He didn't bring back shit. You can't buy the bulbs he thinks he's talking about BECAUSE NOBODY IS MAKING OR SHIPPING THEM TO THE US. And nobody ever will. We don't want them.

(10,926 posts)The rule would have prohibited the sale of bulbs that do not reach a standard of efficiency, and could have seen an end to incandescent bulbs.
Many countries have phased out older bulbs because they waste energy.
But the US energy department said banning incandescent bulbs would be bad for consumers because of the higher cost of more efficient bulbs.
The Department of Energy said it had withdrawn the ban because it was a misinterpretation of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act.
Specifically, the law stipulated that restrictions on bulbs could only be implemented when it was economically justified, Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, told the New York Times.
Activists say the government has come under pressure from manufacturers.

The following January 2014 article (pre-Trump) explains that you will still be able to buy a halogen light bulb, which is a form of incandescent bulb
While you could buy incandescent bulbs for as little as 25 cents each last year, you can expect to pay upwards of $1.50 for each halogen incandescent. But they are roughly 25 percent more efficient that you only need 43 watts to generate the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent.
But theoretically, these new bulbs pay for themselves. Where a traditional 60W bulb costs roughly $8 per year for three hours of light each day, a 43W bulb can put out the same amount of light for only $6 worth of electricity, according to manufacturer estimates. That would more than cover the cost of the bulb.

Apparently what the lifting of the ban that the BBC article describes, is that old-style inefficient non-halogen incandescents can be sold again.

Lifting rules and regulations. Such as the ones that President Obama had in place that would have
stopped the C-19 virus. We would not be in this world of hurt if Hillary hadn't had the Presidency
stolen from her.

(50,567 posts)After I inherited my parents house, the first thing I did was to throw away the 30 incandescent bulbs in the fixtures and replace them with LED bulbs. My electric bill the month before I did it (I paid the bill the last 2 months before mom died because she wasnt able to do that kind of thing) was $105. With the same amount of heating days, the first bill on LED bulbs was $60. This month, with the furnace off it was $40.
And I look better under LED bulbs than I did under incandescent, in no small part because I picked bulbs that put out more light.
Well anyway, some Trumpist put up this question: Are you ecstatic President Trump reversed the ban on incandescent light bulbs? I said that of all the things Trump has done to try to troll the libs, this may be the dumbest. Oh my...the comments make it clear some people thought I was advocating banning apple Pie and Motherhood.
The strange thing is, none of these dickheads have ever heard of a halogen A19 bulb. You get all the goodness of incandescent in a bulb that fits any household fixture at a big savings in electricity, and it is compliant with the Bush light bulb law.
