The body of the late Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Thursday.
An invitation-only arrival ceremony for the late congressman and civil rights leader will take place Monday at 1:30 p.m., and the public will be allowed to pay their respects Monday and Tuesday, according to congressional leaders. Lewis will lie in state at the top of the Capitols East Front Steps during the public viewing.
Anyone wishing to pay their respects will be required to wear masks in compliance with an order issued by Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), while social distancing will be strictly enforced according to the announcement.
Lewiss family has asked those wishing to pay their respects not to travel across the country, citing the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

(10,885 posts)Out of respect for civil rights leader Rev. C. T. Vivian who passed on the same day, John Lewis' family chose to keep his arrangements low-key.
Lewis and Vivian were close friends from the early days of the civil rights struggle.
Willie A. Watkins tasked with funerals of John Lewis and C.T. Vivian
In 1965 in Selma, they were each brutally beaten just a month apart while trying to register Black voters and bring attention to the generational plight of disenfranchised Blacks.
And last Friday, the Rev. C.T. Vivian and Congressman John Lewis died within hours of each other.
They walked together, talked together and strategized together, Willie A. Watkins said. They took the beatings that others didnt and survived unafraid. God took them at the ages of 95 and 80. And now here they are in the same room together.

Our concern is that we dont want C.T. Vivian to be the shadows, Watkins said. We want to celebrate what he did, too, for us to be where we are today. And in doing so, we have put together a celebration.
Details of Lewis funeral, who had been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1986, will be announced after Vivians service.
