As US Coronavirus Cases Surpass 4 Million, Medical Experts Urge To Shut Down And Start Over

Source: CNN

By Madeline Holcombe, 2 hrs. ago.

As the US hit a sobering 4 million cases of Covid-19 and the rising daily rate of confirmed cases and hospitalizations suggest the virus is far from under control, medical experts are urging political leaders to shut down the country and start over to contain the pandemic.

At least 4,038,748 coronavirus cases and 144,304 deaths have been recorded in the United States, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. As the numbers climb, more than 150 prominent US medical experts, scientists, teachers, nurses and others have signed a letter to political leaders urging them to shut down the country and start over to contain the surging coronavirus pandemic.

"Right now we are on a path to lose more than 200,000 American lives by November 1st. Yet, in many states people can drink in bars, get a haircut, eat inside a restaurant, get a tattoo, get a massage, and do myriad other normal, pleasant, but non-essential activities," the letter said.

Coronavirus is set to become a leading cause of death in the US, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mortality statisticians told CNN via email Thursday...

....normal summer.

Now basically a whole year will be wasted.

I love the job that Lamont did - we were supposed to open the bars a week or so ago, but he was cautious and postponed that and some other things indefinitely.

A few days ago hospitalized cases were down to a mere 56 in a state of 3.5 million.

Far, far, far from under control. In fact, it us more like it is out of control. More cases mean more potential vectors which means more rapidly increasing spread.

There are indications that we may be experiencing exponential growth. That brings the classic penny on a chessboard analogy to mind.

I'll put one penny on the first corner square of a chessboard and you double them every square. The last square is how much you will pay me.

and that shutdowns are socialism. Masks send you straight to hell. And spreading the virus is American exceptionalism and freedom.

Who are you going to trust? Some snowflakes with fancy degrees and a lifetime career in science, or some youtube videos from frustrated people ranting in their cars while driving? Youtube any day.

SARS2 is out there and no amount of shutting down again will change that now. Even in a state like PA where Wolf acted early and was extremely conservative about re-opening and where contact tracing is a real thing being done, case have spiked up.

Further the whole shut down thing isn't to keep Americans from getting sick, it's because our system of privately run, mostly for-profit hospitals can't handle fewer than 1% of Americans getting sick at the same time.

Just because something is "out there" doesn't mean it can't be controlled. Without available hosts to infect, the virus dies. It really is that simple. We knew that as soon as republican governors decided to reopen too early to please their dear leader, we'd have to start all over again.

data to track cases. They were on top of it. They were cautious about re-opening, too, limiting retail customers and the like.

NY's numbers look good, but that's because Cuomo hasn't really re-opened NYC.

PA was likewise very cautious in re-opening, does contact tracing and uses a lot of different data to figure out what's happening. Yet cases are on the upswing here, too. We have had a mask order in place except for a very short few weeks when counties went "green" and the whole 9 yards of mitigation since March.

Right now, 4 states account for over 25% of all confirmed SARS2 cases. Another 7 states with cases between 100,000 and 200,000 account for about another 25%. That is 11 states accounting for over half of all reported SARS2 cases.

10 states have fewer than 10,000 cases each with most of infected appearing to have recovered. Another 7 states have fewer than 20,000 cases.

The media is focusing on places where SARS2 cases are rising quickly, but they are not giving a complete picture of what is happening in the entire country.

Further, shutting down does not mean people won't be going out or going to work. When we were shut down, people were out every day shopping at the stores that were deemed "essential businesses" and the employees of those businesses were expected to be at work every day. State and local governments need the revenue from businesses to run, that is the bottom line.

This letter represents medical people who are more worried about their colleagues in hot spots than they are about preventing Americans from getting SARS2. If they were worried about the latter, they'd be asking for things like Ig injections of convalescent plasma that could be given to vulnerable populations or to re-open schools safely in the fall.

That includes California. Instead of keeping everything shut down for a few more weeks, they succumbed to the RW/AR-15/MAGA crowd and the churches. Now it will have to start all over again. The only way to get over this is to rob the virus of as many available hosts as possible for as long as it takes. No "special exemptions" for beaches, churches, etc. Furthermore, this should have always been a federal effort but, alas, any hope of that is dashed at least until next January.

That's 6 wks. All the indicators met the CDC guidelines for re-opening. Bars/restaurants were limited to 50% capacity. I doubt Gov Wolf/DoH could have been more conservative. Yet, we are seeing more cases despite it all.

I think we need a hard country-wide shut down, including people who refuse to wear masks when out of the house for essential tasks being put into quarrantine in a facility (like a guarded hotel rented by the Feds). This includes people who wear masks and have their noses or mouths exposed.

I think that shut down should last until it isn't necessary any more ... IOW, for a couple of months.

Otherwise, things will continue to get worse. At least the hard shut down would be limited, instead of the way it is now, unlimited.

and Trump's archenemy.....

China reported 21 new coronavirus cases, down from 22 cases a day earlier, the health commission said on Friday.

However, news from our southern neighbor is not so good....

Mexico reported a record 8,438 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 718 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 370,712 cases and 41,908 total deaths.

And, to compound our misery, this from Trump and his compliant CDC.....

The president acknowledged in his daily press briefing that hot spots may need to delay reopening schools by a few weeks, but otherwise pushed for students to be able to return to classrooms en masse in the fall. It came as the Centers for Disease Control echoed his words, issuing a new statement on the importance of reopening schools: “Covid-19 poses low risks to school-aged children, at least in areas with low community transmission,” the CDC said.

We took 2 weeks to go from 3 million cases to 4 million cases. We're at 4,200,000+ cases, that's 200,000 in just 48 hours, which means it will be just a week to go from 4 million to 5 million. By November, it should be tens of millions.

All these blustering bozos can do is lie about the data, drag their feet on releasing numbers, and put pressure on doctors and MEs to list the deaths as heart failure.

We'll be lucky to get out of this with only tens of millions infected by the time a vaccine comes out. And we still don't know how long a vaccine will protect us when it does come out.

This is what pandemics do and pandemic flu is bad enough. This is a virus no one has ever had before so no one has partial immunity to it from related strains.
