75-80 people taken into custody during protest in midtown Omaha

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Jessica Wade

About 75 to 80 protesters were taken into custody near 28th and Farnam Streets Saturday evening after Omaha police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly.

Omaha Police Capt. Mark Matuza said the protest started peacefully. At about 9:15 p.m., the crowd started walking east on Farnam Street in the westbound lanes obstructing traffic. Police also were seeing Facebook posts about possible damage to be done downtown.

"It leaned toward the potential of getting violent," Matuza said.

He said late Saturday evening that some barricades were knocked over downtown, but no other damage was done.

That's quite a quote.
It's the thought police without even intuiting thought.

I’m probably just ignorant about laws, but it seems that either you would be or you wouldn’t. Did the police just look at people and decide that they looked like they might resist?

become violent?

How is this possible? in order for an arrest to happen an act against the law must occur not a Potential act! not a Possible act! It needs to be an actual act. This needs to be investigated to see if this is police abuse of power.

Quite clearly. In the first sentence. It says what the act--or circumstance--was that triggered the arrest.

That has a meaning beyond "maybe it'll get bad."

(Note that there are crimes that are "on suspicion of" and others involving conspiracy. These are crimes even though the act contemplated is potential and not actual.)

Two for two.

Thank You! I am so surprised to see, and read about these protests and what has spurred them...aside from George Floyd. I am so effing ignorant when it comes to this country.
