There was a shooting death Saturday night amid a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas. One man is dead, and another person was detained, police spokeswoman Officer Katrina Ratcliff told reporters.
This happened at the 300 block of Congress Ave, she said. (Thats several blocks north of the Colorado River.) According to the police account, officers were monitoring protesters when shots were fired. A man was found with a gunshot wound, and was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Dell Seton Medical Center, Ratcliff said.

(2,270 posts)HELL of a lot of shots fired! Surely more than was needed if he "felt threatened" as I'm sure his defense will be.

(86,646 posts)law enforcement on who claimed the deceased was carrying a rifle so the guy shot him and others. Sounded like the usual cancel out of the crime and the guilt of the shooter.

(69 posts)I was watching this feed when it happened.
The protester who got shot was carrying an AK-47 Rifle. Protesters surrounded the car protester with the AK approached the car, shots were fired.
Some people say the protester fired 5 shots, then the occupant of the car fired 3 in response. I think it's still a bit too early to know how it went down, but we do know the outcome.
I'm frankly surprised this hasn't happened before now.
Yesterday was not a good day for protesters.
3 shot by accidental discharge in Louisville
1 shot by another protester who was trying to shoot someone who drove through the crowd on the interstate in Aurora CO
1 shot in Austin.
Be safe out there people.

(69 posts)There are 5 shots from what sounds like a rifle, then 3 shots a moment later from a pistol and then what might be a followup shot from the rifle right after the 3rd pistol shot.
For those not firearm knowledgeable, Rifle shots sound different than pistol shots.

There are pictures out there (I'm not very good at linking pictures) that show him standing by his disabled wife earlier in the day.
There are also pictures of him in front of the car with his rifle right before he was shot.
How do you link a picture?

(35,317 posts)What's common in the automatic assumption that the protestors are just misunderstood as they take up arms, as they surround a car, as they beat on it and threaten the occupant.
It's always the occupant's fault for being threatened by a crowd of people hitting the car, possibly breaking the windows, shouting and making gestures, climbing on the vehicle. You'd think they were baristas taking the car occupant's beverage order and the occupant was privileged and not victimized.

(25,364 posts)We don't know if he fired his rifle or if he even brandished it. If he fired the rifle, we will have an answer shortly. The protester was armed, but that's all I know.

(210 posts)According to her, Garrett did NOT have his rifle with him that night. He was pushing Whitney's wheelchair, and the car tried to swerve into them. He hit the car with the flat of his hand, and the driver shot him five times. Whitney is absolutely beside herself, and we're trying to do whatever we can for her. People are FLOODING Garrett's page with hate.

(1,568 posts)This one says he wasn't being aggressive or pointing it, though. There is also a still from a video that suggests he did in fact have his rifle on him.
We'll eventually get confirmation if he did or didn't have his rifle on him, and if he did or didn't fire it as some people suggest. Although, the claims he fired his rifle first seem to solely be based on people judging the sounds from the video. There is some people claiming the driver had a handgun and others saying he also had a rifle. I find it more difficult to believe someone was driving with a loaded rifle in a location that could quickly be accessed.
I will wait for more information to come from the investigators before making any assumptions on what happened.

(210 posts)Yes, he did have his rifle that afternoon. He put it in the trunk of their car before sun down. He did not have it with him when the driver attempted to run them over.

(25,364 posts)The entire protest is on FB Live. He's at the very beginning with his rifle too. I watched as much of the video that I could to figure out what was going on. I spotted him about 15 minutes before he was shot. He was carrying his rifle along with another white guy. That was the last I saw of him as I was trying to trace his steps etc.

(25,364 posts)They are blaming him for his own death.
People are just plain old ugly. It started with the Tea Party and they are nothing but filled with hate.
Police are deciding what charges if any to bring against Garrett's shooter and I assume one of the other protestors who also fired his rifle at the shooter's car. (The protestor fired after the shooter took off from the scene) According to police, Garrett did not fire his rifle.

Austin police identify protester shot, killed by driver
Garrett Foster and Whitney Mitchell
Garrett Foster was identified as the man who died in a shooting at a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas on Saturday night, July 25, 2020. Foster was often at the protests in Austin. He was a Libertarian military veteran and witnesses said he was well-known among the activists participating in the protests in the city. Foster, 28, was shot dead while with his fiancee, Whitney Mitchell, a quadruple amputee who was in a wheelchair, his mother told ABC News.
Police have not yet publicly identified Foster as the victim in the shooting. The driver of a car who is believed to have shot Foster was taken into custody by Austin Police and is cooperating in the investigation, a police spokesperson said. He has not been identified. Fosters mother, Sheila Foster, identified her son in an interview with ABCs Good Morning America.
Witnesses and police said Foster was carrying a rifle. Open carry is legal in Texas. Police said he was approaching a car that had driven up to the crowd of protesters. Fosters mother, Sheila Foster, told ABC News her son and his fiancee were taking part in the protest, when the driver, got out of his car and started firing shots, and my son was shot three times.
Fosters mother said her son has a license to carry and would have felt the need to protect himself. Some of these things we have seen on the media have tended to go a little violently. It was a chaotic situation. There were relatively a thousand people at the protest and someone was driving erratically through the crowd. People were getting out of the way and telling this gentleman to slow down and telling him to just stop driving because he was at risk of hitting someone. She said that is when Foster was shot.
