TAMPA No daily records were broken in Sundays report on the damage the novel coronavirus has wreaked thus far in the state.
From Sunday to Sunday, the state reported 872 new resident deaths, breaking the record for number of fatalities reported in a single week. It also posted a total of 73,808 positive infections and 384,843 people tested.
Still, the numbers of infections and deaths tied to the virus showed little sign of slowing as Florida surpassed New York as the state with the second-highest number of total coronavirus cases, behind California.
In the last 24 hours, Floridas Department of Health reported 9,344 coronavirus infections and 78 fatalities.

I expect DeSantis will try to fudge the testing outcomes given the current backlog and delays in getting test results, so it will be interesting to see how hospitalizations and deaths fare, since it kind of hard to fudge a hospital that is full.

(6,699 posts)You see, they really believe this virus just needs to get spread and "protect the elderly", but let the rest of nation enjoy death and future horrific symptoms for the rest of their days....that is the price we all pay; UNLESS, of course, I GET THE FUCKING VIRUS.
That's the way they think. A relative of mine who lives in Florida, just texted me yesterday: "It doesn't matter how much we social distance. This is not the first pandemic to hit the human race. It's a once in a 100 year event. Luckily our medical advances are pretty good compared to the Spanish flu 100 years ago......I'm not too worried about the pro athletes. I do worry about the people in nursing homes or people with serious health issues."....because, of course, his mother is in a nursing home.
This is their base line thinking. It doesn't fucking matter, so long as it doesn't affect ME!! If I'm losing money?...IT AFFECTS ME!!
Pretty simple analysis.

(5,405 posts)Newsom failed us when he reopened the state too early and now we will be playing catch-up for months. It isn't only republicans that have ignored science and medical opinion to cost lives.

(17,387 posts)I think people forget that California is the largest state in the United States and that it has large pro-Trump areas like Orange County where there are a lot of people who are insistent that COVID-19 is a hoax. It is the opposite of Georgia where the Governor is anti-mask, but the Mayor of Atlanta is doing her best to stop the spread.

"It's a hoax," the 51-year-old told AFP as he exited a clothing store maskless, referring to a state rule that people in most public places wear face coverings.
"The more you test people, the more you come up with new cases," he said, echoing words from President Donald Trump as he attempted to explain the record number of infections recently recorded in California and several other states.
Davey is not the only resident of this city in Orange County, which has a large Republican presence, to revolt against lockdowns and mask rules.
