Federal agents who have battled with Black Lives Matter protests in Portland in recent weeks will be leaving the city this week.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown issued a statement on Wednesday after speaking to Vice President Mike Pence and other government leaders.
"The federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland. They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence," she wrote on Twitter.
Brown added that all Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will depart from downtown Portland beginning on Thursday.

(10,085 posts)I just hope the governor and other officials are ready to deal with the right-wing hoodlums who have been causing a lot of the violence. They are likely to stay behind and keep causing trouble because making the BLM protests look violent has been their goal all along.

One thing you can say about the current party, they've been consistently tone deaf about everything.

(23,971 posts)the Gestapo will depart, and Trump will have his little poop-flinging press party where he crows about how successful he is and how his methods are the most effective anyone has ever seen

To ALL the protesters in Portland - young people, moms, dads, vets and seniors - YOU ARE ALL PATRIOTS!!!
Thank you for stepping up to physically confront this threat of fascism this horrendous administration has inflicted upon your city. We are all grateful for your sacrifices and you have inspired us!

(7,412 posts)Their gonna try to get to that courthouse once the feds leave, its a symbol of victory to them. Gotta remember, they were damaging property and fighting the police in Portland regularly the last few years, this isnt a new thing in the last two weeks that is going to disappear.
With the feds gone theyll just pick a new focal point or enemy, like maybe the state police guarding the federal courthouse.

The Feds stirred 'em back up, so no I think they will channel their energy back to Police Brutality again. Trump created a distraction.

(2,032 posts)You can't believe anything this administration says:
As I told the Governor yesterday, federal law enforcement will remain in Portland until the violent activity toward our federal facilities ends, said Wolf, contradicting the freshly made announcement from Brown.

Trump "activated" AG Barr and got what he wanted. Looking tough on crime.
Expect to see that footage run ad nauseam now till November.

(5,586 posts)DHS has said they're not going anywhere in the short term. My impression was that Trump thought the riots were playing well for him, and I can't see why he'd just up and surrender something right when it starts getting good for him.
